Make sure to talk to your DM before you make your character sheet so you can adapt your concept to the setting. 4. Dont try to homebrew stuff that isnt in a rulebook. You arent ready for it yet. 5e is nice in that there arent nearly as many books as previous editions. 3. Alignment is descriptive, not prescriptive. Two people can play Lawful Good characters differently and even have conflict between the two, and neither of them is inherently wrong. 2. Tropes are fine. The lovable but dumb barbarian can be compelling despite being a huge stereotype (e.g. Grog from CR Season 1). Just make sure you fit in with the group, and that the group fits with you. 1. Do not be disruptive to the party. If you need to justify a severely douchey decision to a party member or overall party (e.g. killing an NPC or guard for annoying you, stealing from the party, or Leeroy Jenkins-ing) as thats what my character would do, its a sign that you shouldnt have made that character. Get into a cab not knowing any Mandarin and pray the driver would take me where I needed to go based on what I hoped was an accurate copy of a Chinese address. (He did.) 4. Get separated from my other students in the Forbidden City because I wanted to see the Hall of Clocks. The Hall of Clocks is fucking awesome but I scared the shit out of everyone. 3.
