1. Bullying Manager.

This person will threaten you, be rude to you, attempt to humiliate you infront of your friends and other managers, set you up for failure, and so on. This is one of the worsts type of manager. They will see little if anything wrong with this kind of behaviour. This is the kind of behaviour that you might remember from second school / high school, but in this case, because it's a manager, they will be able to do a lot more to you.

2. Blind Eye Manager.

This manager, as the name suggests, will turn a blind eye to things. Generally speaking, they will be a senior or personell manager, and will turn a blind eye to bad junior managers. Things they refuse to acknowledge can include bullying behaviour, criminal activity, and so on.

3. Helpless Manager.

Also know as a Helen Keller Manager, this type of manager really has no idea what is going on. At all. Do not go to them with problems, ask them to do work, etc.

4. Slander Manager.

This is the most dangerous type of manager, the very worst. This is because the effect they have on you and your life might go many years beyond you quitting the company. They will spread various untrue rumours about you, malicious and very damanging rumours, and they may do this without anything happening to them. Most common forms of rumours will be that you have a mental illness, you are LGBT, you are a rapist, or you are a pedophile. These rumours may force you to quit the company, but as implied earlier, may haunt you for many years to come.

5. Lazy Manager.

Expect to work very hard about him or her, to make up for the manager's laziness. Likes engaging in lengthy conversations with senior managers, to try and impress upon those people how great they are. Rather than seen doing actual work, they will often disappear for hours, and later say they were "doing paperwork".

6. Criminal Activities Manager.

This manager will manifest in one of two main forms: they will either do criminal acts themselves, or get others to do them on their behalf. The latter is probably more common - these people do not like getting their hands dirty. Sufficed to say, which kind of manager you have, you might end up getting fired, or even facing criminal charges.

7. Arrogant Manager.

This person will spend a lot of time bragging about how great they are. How well-developed their skillsets are; how good they are with people; how hard they work; how they put in more hours than anyone; how young they are for their position. And so on. This person is more of an annoyance than a serious threat, but do not laugh when they speak. Just agree. This person will often be a compulsive liar.

Additionally, bare in mind that different types of managers may support each other in causing problems for workers. For example, a Slander Manager - the worst type - may get away with spreading untrue rumours about you because the manager works for either a Blind Eye Manager or Helpless Manager. On top of this, the types of manager are not mutually exclusive. A manager can simultaneously fall into multiple catergories, and on very rare occasions, all 7 categories. In that case, just quit the job.

Thoughts on all this? Have you had many of these types of managers? Which do you think is most harmful, and least harmful?

my boss's new partner is a combination of 1 3 5 and 7. It's gone in less than a month from a place I loved to be, and was more than happy to put in extra effort, to a giant fucking headache I need to escape.

both of these guys were friends before they were bosses, but watching the new guy completely change with the new (unearned) power, and the old guy not having the strength of will to get him to calm the fuck down is pretty depressing.

8. The People's Dear Manager
This type of manager has a fragile ego, demands reverence and rewards loyalty above all else. They pose little danger to those who are able to ingratiate their way into the inner bootlicker clique. It's generally a good idea to carefully ration one's interactions with the Dear Manager, as every conversation also presents a risk of committing a perceived slight. However, keeping too much distance is inadvisable because Dear Managers derive their sense of importance by spastically making personnel changes.

Interesting thread to read... I guess I see elements of each of the negative behaviours in people I've worked with but I don't think anyone is so binary that they are always in one particular category consistently.

I do wonder if my juniors see me in any of those categories though... hmm. If they were anything like me they probably think those above them either know nothing or do nothing, but don't quite appreciate what the more senior roles actually end up occupying themselves with.

I've experienced some of these. But in my line of work, that's no problem for me. Don't have my equipment I asked for? I'll wait.
Don't have my permits signed off? I'll wait
Don't have enough people to do the job? I'll wait

It gets old but it's really not my problem, figure it out lol

I had 1 and 6 rolled into one person for a while. It was awful.

She sent a law clerk to court and told her to pretend she's a lawyer. It was a simple thing and she didn't get caught, but if she had there would've been trouble.
That person could've lost their career

Hopefully they learned or left. That would get them blackballed if they wanted to continue in the legal field I'd imagine
