So i discovered a major soviet ( now russian ) film studio mosfilm uploaded tons of their old soviet era movies for free on youtube ,( yay communism )

I have watched 2 so far and they are pretty good. White sun of the desert a war movie take place in the desert around caspian sea.

Solaris a sci fi movie about a sentient planet and humanity's contact and trying to understand it. Really well written, very good.

Which is honestly surprising since every film was supposed to be a propaganda piece.

i don't find them too "propaganda-ish" too much. especially solaris because i don't think even the soviet is mentioned. the characters have more western names too.

The USSR did some amazing movies, yeah. Granted, a lot of the major artists butted heads with the party line, and...inevitably lost, but that those movies are so good speaks volumes about their maker's' resilience.

I recommend looking into some of the silent movies. Russia was pretty much making the best movies in the world in the late 20s, and everyone else knew it, even though industries and governments prevented their commercial distribution. I dunno if Mosfilm has uploaded any of those, though. Early Soviet talkies also have several gems among them, and pre-Soviet cinema was also a contender in the early days of movies.

Beyond Russian movies, there are lots of fine Polish, Czech, Slovak (especially Czechoslovak) and Hungarian films. And I've heard good things about films from Georgia, too.

On the whole, I'd rather have a Marple Cinematic Universe.

I would recommend the works of Vsevelod Pudovkin, Alexandr Dovzhenko (basically the Tarkovsky of silent Russian cinema), and more films by Dziga Vertov if you can find them. They and Eisenstein tend to be regarded as the four most significant Soviet silent filmmakers, though there are, naturally, several other notable filmmakers as well, probably just as good.
