Probably still a decade out before quantum computing is versatile enough to be used for practical purposes, but this is still pretty cool. They were able to compute in 200 seconds what would take modern supercomputers 10,000 years.

Unsurprisingly, IBM, the company that operates the supercomputer that Google claims to have beaten, and a key quantum computer competitor, is disputing Googles claims. In a blog post published pre-emptively on Monday, the company said that the same task could be performed on a classical system in just 2.5 days, rather than the 10,000 years that Google is claiming.

That's... not much of a rebuttal. Sure, 2.5 days is significantly less than 10,000 years, but it's still three orders of magnitude (216,000 seconds) slower than Google's result.

this is stupid they're most likely just keeping track of two states or something with a associative property and trying to make it sound all high tech

litterally anything can be done faster if you code it correctly, electricity operates in billionths of a second

... only to a point, obviously. the point here is to be showing differences in speed not due to coding optimization, but instead changing the actual hardware

Big deal, anything can be done if you just do it that way

No the last time they had another computer do the same computation it actually took that long
