PBS has some great YouTube channels.

This one is space time, it's basically cosmos with less wonder and more hard science, but they're good at making it understandable.

If we are alone the probability of there being a God/higher power increases greatly tbh

Or that we ourselves are the simulation/creation of a higher specie of aliens.

About the god thing...... I dont get why God would create such a big universe and then only populate one tiny planet. What's the point of the rest of the universe then?

Because how could there in this vast universe could there be only one example of life. Unless someone designed it to be there.

Didn't watch the video, but it seems like it's about the Rare Earth Hypothesis, which is outdated and highly restrictive.

There's anywhere from 100 billion to 500 billion planets in this galaxy alone. About a trillion in our sister galaxy.

Literally everything happens for a reason, dude. Its not magic.

I shouldnt talk though. I kept reading the thread after "Can you prove aliens exist? No? Well if GameFAQs can't prove aliens exist, they for sure don't" like a chucklehead.

This. I feel like statistically it would be almost impossible for there not to be life somewhere else in the universe. I doubt we are all that special in the grand scheme of things.

The universe is literally infinite

no it isn't

we don't really know whether it is infinite or not. we have no way of knowing what's beyond the edge of the observable universe, past the cosmic horizon.

oh, well if you can move beyond the observable universe then surely it must be infinite

i am just looking for someone to correct these propositions:

.the universe cannot be infinite because then nothing could have a center of mass (if the universal principle has no center than all things in the universe must have no center, as a universal truth, otherwise there would be no room for infinite quantities at all)

.the universe as the sum of all things is only one thing, a finite count

.if the universe is where all physical laws apply then you can't move beyond finite states

It can be both, in a sense.

There can be life out there that we'll never reach. Everything is constantly getting further from everything else, even if we could get light speed travel, it wouldn't be enough to catch up.

this conclusion doesn't really follow from the premise because mass isn't spacetime and spacetime isn't mass. there is no center of the universe because every part of spacetime is expanding away from every other part at the same time, like if you were to draw a bunch of dots on an uninflated balloon and then inflate it. all of the dots would be further away from all the others in every direction on the surface of the balloon, but there cannot be said to be a center of the surface of that balloon that all the dots expand away from equally.

but mass is completely different. mass can have a center because of its physical properties, regardless of what the structure and properties of spacetime are.

so void has been limited by this thing you call mass? and it's still infinite, somehow?

Not necessarily true. Getting sufficiently close to c can theoretically let you travel the entirety of the universe

Basically my thoughts. If the Universe is infinite, then the odds that we are unique are so astronomically low as to be impossible. There is life out there. The odds that we'll ever interact with that life is almost as astronomic as us being alone.

The universe doesn't have to be infinite for it be very much likely.

Some facts I usually post lol.

There's an estimated 200 billion to 2 trillion galaxies in the known universe across 93 billion light years and 14 billion years.

There's an estimated 1 septillion stars in the known universe and that's based off the lower end number of galaxies. With an average of one planet per star, that's a septillion planets in the known universe.

if mass exists in the universe, surely it must have properties that make it a part of the universe. motion is one, because the universe is expanding. infinity in principle can be one if you account for infinite human ingenuity.
