As a manager, yes.
My employees are useful tools in making my life easier. With that said, it's in my best interest to keep them happy. Otherwise they will find other employment and I'll be stuck with garbage.

I'm pretty upfront about my view of them and they're happy with the results. They'd rather be paid more than have us be friends or some shit. My friendship isn't going to pay for your kids braces.

I think the age of you vs subordinates makes a huge difference. In my company I think around three quarters of employees are in the 23-33 age band, with I'd say a large concentration in the 24-26 range, and hence you do end up building some genuine friendships.
