Only insofar as the main enemy seems to be someone the main character was friends with in the past.

The whole political angle is pretty new. While Yakuza has almost always involved politics, they've yet to approach it from the angle of "these foreigners are committing crimes and need to go".

Given the global situation in real life, which I'm sure the writers are aware of, I'm interested in seeing a Japanese storyteller's take on this.

Friend kills guy, main character takes the fall for it, main character gets out of jail years later, turns out friend was plotting against him and used the opportunity to jump up.

It's ridiculously close.

Yeah you're not wrong about those points. Of course, there's quite a bit more to the story of Y1 than just that, but the setup is pretty similar.
