We got called for a code (aka cardiac arrest) by the nurses and when we arrived, the patient is literally sitting up and moving her arms around and looking at us.

Fucking wut >_>

Seriously I've seen tons of incompetent stuff from nursing homes and patient neglect. Some of it is because the nurses are understaffed and underpaid and have like 12 people to 1 nurse, but they also seem to hire some dumb nurses too idk.

Basically if your relatives get old, get home care. Nursing homes are probably the worst place to put someone >_>

if by "some" you mean "mostly nurses who shouldn't have passed boards and shouldn't be around patients" then i agree

like.... people who come to work in icu from nursing homes, especially if they worked there for a long time, are some of the most incompetent people i've seen. it doesn't matter if you've been a nurse for 20 years if you don't know what a declining ICU patient looks like or idk to suction your vent-dependent patient who's been alarming the vent continuously while you're shopping on amazon oooorrrr to not let your nicardipine drip run dry when your BP goals are <140sys and you're patient is sitting at a hot 180. Jesus Christ.
This is why ICU orientation needs to be the same length if you're a new nurse or an old nurse.

And agreed. Nursing homes, while a necessity, let people rot all too often and it's despicable.

i don't agree with assisted living some of em are bad. but if there's no choice it's more of a last resort option. my grandfather gets visits from home care every day to check up on him and do a few errands whenever family is too busy at work to help with that. cancer spread to his leg, has trouble walking while in pain.

Yeah they call in a patient is sick so they get sent to the hospital and don't have to deal with patients for most of their shift. It's really awful.

Medicare nursing homes are awful, but private ones are great... if you can afford it.

This is usually true. But good private nursing homes are literally 80k a year at least.

My grandparents on my mother's side got screwed by a piss-poor nursing home. My grandpa broke a bone and was supposed to stay there for rehabilitation but they just kept him hopped up on drugs to the point he was incoherent and out of it all the time because it was easier for them to do that than just do their jobs, I guess. I don't remember the details exactly but my grandma was there too after getting sick a few weeks after my grandpa went in and she ended up dying because they screwed up her medications or something. They never suffered any repercussions for any of it. It's fucking sickening and makes me scared of getting elderly.
