Yep, a lot of terms for craziness/insanity have literal origins, such as batshit (an hallucinatory illness that can be triggered by overexposure to certain types of bat droppings, it was often experienced by roofers on old buildings like churches) and lunatic (lunar, because people used to believe the moon cycle affected mental illness).
