Poll of the Day > To any Discord users/former users. Anything particularly bad about it?

Friends and I have been using Ventrilo for years and paying $2 per month for five voice chat slots. When we need to send any links or contact each other outside of Ventrilo we would use Line or Steam. We switched over to Discord last night and I am baffled with myself that we did not make the switch sooner.

Between it being free and both chat room and voice chat combined, it perfectly fit our needs. I think we only did not switch out of Ventrilo sooner was because the $2 per month fee was so low to even register on our minds and partly cause we were mindlessly using Ventrilo without a thought of using any other until last night.

That being said. Anything particularly bad about Discord that services/programs like Mumble, Ventrilo, and Teamspeak continue to be used? I do like Ventrilo for its simplicity but am not bothered by all the "flashiness" of Discord.

My biggest complaint with it is for some reason the app doesn't save your settings between sessions (or at least for some reason on my computer it doesn't). So every time I open it I have to disable desktop notifications or it just plays back hundreds of posts from the last time I logged in and it's annoying as HELL.

The desktop version wakes me up with the notifications and the only way to mute it is by going into the settings and toggling every single one.

Otherwise it's pretty good.

Actually since 2002. This is my second account. I didn't start using Discord till maybe several months ago when my Final Fantasy XIV guild started using the program. Like I said, the $2 per month cost with Ventrilo was too low to register on my mind and the thought simply never crossed our minds to use another service. When I use to raid in World of Warcraft from 2006 to 2012ish, my guild used Ventrilo so I kinda just stuck with it.

Funny thing, at some point I accidentally found the setting that made my discord shut up. I can't find it anymore to tell you how to tell it to shut up and make it remember that you told it to shut up...

So I know it exists, because mine behaves.... but I can't tell you anything but don't give up hope.

Discord's privacy elements are complete fucking garbage.
It's IRC "upsides" are that they added emoji's and custom emoji's.
The desktop straight up just uses chrome, so if it's opened too long, the entire system starts lagging from RAM consumption.
The built-in memes are pretty damn bad and they honestly take away from the experience.

It's not perfect by any means, but it's what I use for most of my stuff, because, hey, it's what other people use.

My friend did mention that as one downside of Discord and how it supposedly sharing our data. I am not bothered by that nor the extra bells and whistles. But as mentioned, I do like the simplicity of Ventrilo but for now Discord is convenient for our needs.

Yup, go back to the original "never give your age, name, or personal information" when dealing with Discord.

Ventrilo doesn't have the IRC portions, so you would need to convince someone to not get one, but two systems. That's... real bad to getting more than three people involved.

I don't like it tracking every program I have open. I wish I could turn off that bullshit. I don't care what other people are playing and I don't want everyone seeing everything I'm playing.

Oddly enough it is only now that I am experiencing oddities with Discord. Only recently were some messages/links in the chat window getting translated into speech via text-to-speech when despite all the messages/links posting before never did that.

someone used the tts command. you can turn that off in settings.

never had that happen, and discord is open 90% of the time
