Gyarados is based on a karp that became a dragon
and also based on japanese windsocks
hence the flying type

Ever since Pokemon Red, Gyrados has always been my go to in any game if he's available. Investing the time to level up that little Magikarp to level 20 near the start of Red is still a great feeling when your hard work pays off. Always call him Fishface as well for the lulz. Guy was a beast on Pokemon Stadium as well.

Garbage. High attack, but name one good physical water attack.

Waterfall?

Aqua Tail is cool but shit accuracy.

Shit moveset, if you want one with good moves you're gonna have to burn through TMs.

It OHKOs with Thunderbolt thanks to its shit speed (an electric type will almost always be faster than Gyarados) and shit special defense.

What flying moves does it learn for the STAB?

And there's a hundred abilities better than intimidate.

3/10.

I've played up until gen 5 and everytime I'm not using a water starter Pokemon, I always considered Gyarados on my team. On the several times where it made the cut, it is never disappointing. It's a great Pokemon that IIRC is available in all gens.

No it doesn't. A lot of great Pokemon have double weaknesses. Gyarados is one of the few Pokemon that's been consistently great for competitive play since its debut. Gen 8 only just started, but right now Gyarados is considered to be one of the most powerful Pokemon in the meta.

super cool

I remember using some dumb defensive gyarados set in gen4 that was probably objectively less effective than offensive gyarados by was absolutely hilarious. when you factor in intimidate its defensive stats are pretty good and it doesn't have very many weaknesses. Think the set was rest / sleeptalk / waterfall / roar

Ignorance at its finest. Gyarados has GREAT coverage, one of the best boosting moves and several utility options.

His flying stab is meh but that is barely a factor because he usually Dynamaxes and if you aren't dynamaxing you probably want earthquake instead to nail Toxapex and electric types anyways rather than using bounce.

Waterfall
Bounce(Mostly used for Max Airstream rather than on its own merits)
Earthquake
Power Whip
Stone Edge
Ice Fang
Crunch
Outrage
Iron Head
Taunt
Substitute
Dragon Dance
Thunder Wave

He also can use Moxie as his ability over intimidate(which intimidate also great WTF you smoking.)

Gyarados is possibly the STRONGEST non legendary in Sun/Moon because he can Dynamax and Snowball hard via Moxie and Max Airstream boosting his attack and speed while Max Geyser boosts his STAB with rain. He also has the bulk to take a lot of hits. Even survives several relevant mons unboosted electric moves.

Even without Dynamaxing he is strong and has been good since Gen 3.

Snowballing is where something starts to get a lot of momentum and eventually goes out of control and becomes nigh unstoppable. So, for example, a Gyarados with Moxie (+1 Atk whenever it knocks out a Pokemon) that has the chance to set up a Dragon Dance (+1 Attack, +1 Speed) will start to grow out of control after a kill or two, because by then it's got +3 Attack. At that point, unless you've got something that can outspeed it or survive one hit and crush its face in return, it's gonna stomp anything that gets sent out, except maybe - big maybe - the beefiest physical walls.

The Max things are Max Moves you can use after you Dynamax/G-Max.

Oh, gotcha.

I thought you were referring to something new in SwSh called Snowball, not the actual term.

All the max moves have an additional effect alongside just being high damaging moves. So the Water one will summon rain after you use it. Fire will give you sun, and so on.
