550 years ago today, Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus was born. From his birthplace in present day Pakistan, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee travelled far and wide teaching people the message of one God who dwells in every one of His creations and constitutes the eternal Truth. He set up a unique spiritual, social, and political platform based on equality, fraternal love, goodness, and virtue. His words are registered in the form of 974 poetic hymns in the holy text of Sikhism. (1469)

He wrote: Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist. This is the sacred thread of the soul.

Not sure if that was him but yes that it is a religious Sikh tradition many still hold.

Sikhism has actually (compared to most religions) adapted to 20th century secularist values pretty well but every now and then some Sikh brings a knife into a school, hospital, airport etc and causes a fuss of security vs religious freedom . Especially in the UK that had a prominent Sikh population

Mass Effect and Babylon 5 both have parodied this actually. Interesting that its Sci-fi taking the piss out of Sikhs

The knife is called a Kirpan and it is one of the five articles of faith that they must all wear (those parts I knew). Looking at Wikipedia, it was introduced given by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. The other four articles are: Kesh (uncut hair), Kangha (a wooden comb for the hair), Kara (an iron bracelet), Kachera (100% cotton tieable undergarment (not an elastic one)) and Kirpan (an iron dagger large enough to defend oneself).
