Apparently Virginia Republicans are worried that Virginia Democrats are somehow going to abolish the 2nd Amendment.

I feel like the conservative heavy Supreme Court wouldn't let a state pass a bunch of blatantly unconstitutional laws about gun control, but what does a triggered lib like me know?

They're probably worried that Virginia Democrats will try to pass laws that force people to turn in firearms without compensation. Which seems like a reasonable fear, as Virginia Democrats tried to do exactly that earlier this year.

I'm combing through the bill right now. So far they proposed banning semi-automaticrifles, shotguns, and handguns with fixed magazine size of 10 or more rounds, certain types of stocks, detatchable magazines certain types of grips, some muzzle accessories, and shotguns with revolving cylinders or detatchable magazines, which I had no idea even existed. It also doesn't mention confiscation, just banning the distribution, possession, etc. of them, which is on par with our drug laws. All of this seems to be to prevent mass shootings. Is this what you're referring to?

Didn't see they had released a new bill, it looks about the same as the one from this summer.

https://trackbill.com/bill/virginia-senate-bill-16-assault-firearms-and-certain-firearm-magazines-prohibiting-sale-transport-etc-penalties/1775668/

If you own a firearm that was previously legal but Virginia now deems too dangerous to own (the vast majority of semiauto rifles, many semiauto handguns), and you don't turn it in (or destroy it, i guess), you become a felon.

nobody wants to take your guns

There are semi-automatic rifles and handguns with fixed magazines. It may be inconvenient not to have another magazine ready to go, but it's also inconvenient for a mass shooter not to have another magazine ready to go. Again, this is holding certain types of guns to the same standards we hold certain drugs to, and I'm sure drugs have an even steeper punishment, as the bill in question makes possession of these guns a Class 6 felony, the most minor of felonies. Above all, though, this bill only applies to the state of Virginia, so even if it outright banned all firearms, it wouldn't be a violation of the Second Amendment.

"It's only a minor felony" wouldn't be much consolation to anyone charged, as felons lose their gun rights for life.

Uh, no, an outright ban of firearms by a state would be a clear violation of McDonald v Chicago.

Ah, they used the Fourteenth Amendment. Fine, whatever, but what about the rest of my post?

There are semiauto rifles with fixed magazines, that doesn't contradict my point as the vast majority of semiauto rifles accept a detachable magazine.

And invoking the war on drugs as model to follow with guns is honestly kind of hilarious, considering its utter failure at anything other than imprisoning millions of people for committing victimless crimes.

No. I should not be limited in having a spare magazine because in a defensive scenario, which is more likely to happen, because a mass shooter MIGHT be inconvenienced should they actually abide by the law in the first place.
In what defensive scenario do you need a spare magazine, 30-50 feral hogs running into your yard while your small kids play?

Correct. I'm honestly fine with those being illegal to own, but I'm not much of a gun guy.

I'm glad you agree that the war on drugs is extremely draconian. Some people have a double standard when it comes to this kind of thing, and I was checking to see if you were one of them.

Ah. I see you have no desire to discuss this in good faith.

Carry on.
I joke, but I do want to know what defensive scenario you would need a spare magazine for.

That day will never come if you keep being wishy washy about it. Look into it. Get some kind of value like being a teacher and move to a country that needs that skill set. Bam you are gone from US.

much like most of these draconian laws they keep redefining what terms mean (and conveniently keep adding items that have already been there to their lists) and make them as broad as possible to trap as many people as they can. as it stands by their own definitions they want to ban probably 90% of firearms across all categories. most firearms use magazines, are detachable and are capable of receiving more than 10 rounds. a glock 19 in California is the same as a glock 19 in texas.
