Obviously, the "main" / most popular genre has shifted over the years. IMO, it went something like this...

Late 80s - mid-90s - platformers
Late 90s - early 2000s - RPGs
Mid 2000s - early 2010s - FPSs
Mid 2010s - late 2010s - sandbox games

I'm sure people will have quite a few different opinions on this. And it's somewhat subjective. But, what do you think?

I would add a extra column for fighters in early to mid 90's.

Seriously? I won't deny that SFII is a hugely influential game, to say nothing of the various other fighters being popular, but I don't think they trumped RPGs. I mean...the sheer number of weebs in the gaming scene.

I feel like the 2000s was more the FPS hayday, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 released, along with the Bad Company games. Counterstrike was earlier also which was wildly popular.

Not many RPGs were the forefront during the heavy arcade scene days. You have to remember that gaming at the time was still a niche activity so fighters were seen as a passable genre to play in without being considerd a dork. Fighters were definitely more casual friendly.

If we're talking strictly about mainstream popularity, there is no question that fighting games ruled the early 90s. Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat were pop culture phenomenons the likes of which gaming might never see again.

I still remember when Halo 3 came out in 2007, then shortly afterwards, MW1, and things shifted from Halo to COD. That ruffled some feathers. Personally, I preferred Halo 3, but not by much.

Same. I liked Bad Company over Call of Duty when it released and pretty much stuck to Battlefield games since. I liked the depth, size, and overall team squad gameplay better.

Yeah, I guess I had forgotten, since it was so longer ago. People loved that stuff. MK2, MK3, to a lesser extent, VF1, and the various KOFs. I don't think I've even played KOF, but someone must've been playing, because it got annaul updates. Probably one of the first franchises that did that.
