.....decks similar to Kithkins, Treants, and burn decks? The last time I played Magic the Gathering was over 10 years ago with the Lorwyn, Shadowmoor, Alara, and Zendikar Blocks. I enjoyed the weenie Kithkin decks and muscular Treant decks. Treants were a favorite of mine given their relative simplicity and brute force power. I enjoyed the typical burn deck as well but never could make one that lasted in a Two-Headed Giant play setting.

Friend and I might get into MTG again but kinda have a draft within ourselves so we don't go crazy with spending money and buying individual power cards. If I want a deck similar to Kithkins and Treants again, what might be the ideal approach?

Comments, opinions, and suggestions are appreciated,

Thank you

The most important question:
What are your friends playing? Are they playing EDH, draft, or 60 card?

That's really what it boils down to, unless you all want to try it out together.

MtG fills a different niche entirely, for me it's a social game.
I sit next to my friends for an hour, we hang out, play EDH, talk about the game and joke around.

Slay the Spire is a single player videogame where I silently sit in front of my computer.

First time learning about such a deck. I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

My friend picked up some pre-built Planeswalker deck and kinda modifying around it. I might follow suit but I'd imagine we will eventually just do draft between ourselves.

At some point, I'd definitely recommend trying out EDH (Commander). It's become one of the most popular formats since the last time you played MTG, for good reason, as Shadow said, because of how fun it is to play with friends while hanging out. More so than other formats really, due to the laid back nature of it and the crazy boardstates that can occur. They do sell pre-constructed decks of Commander (100 cards) for $35, so it's really easy to get into, and upgrading and building your own decks in that format are such a blast.

I chose Gaddock Teeg as my commander but my lazy arse never got around to choosing the cards for the actual deck. Perhaps I'll finally get into this time around.

My suggestion. Dont get into it. It's a money sink. If you DO want to get into it regardless, do MTGO at least that way you arent dependent on locals to play. Plus the online card sells were decent when I played at least. Got almost all my money back when i sold off.

Made me think of this,

Jokes aside, I can agree it can be expensive hence why my friend and I will probably just do drafts within ourselves and a booster box that we split the cost on so we don't buy individual cards at higher prices.

Given that I barely recognize those words, I guess it's a reminder that I haven't played in even longer.

idk, maybe there's a precon for that?

If I ever got back into it, I'd either use my old decks, supplement them with a few updated cards, or get some budget stuff. Honestly, the older stuff appeals more to me. I hate what they did with the card designs and I really don't like most of the technically proficient but soulless art.

Im sure you heard about it if youve posted this anywhere else but they have Mtg arena now which is freemium with full standard and a lame extended format from ixilian onward.

if youre wanting to stick with paper and keeping it cheaper you can google budget decks and usually theres quite a bit of content on that.

I mostly play EDH and I use an almost exclusively planeswalker deck. It plays fairly nicely if I can convince my opponents that Im not a big threat while I build up to an army of unstoppable planeswalkers that nuke every creature before they can attack me, but it dies miserably as soon as anyone plays an Immortal Sun.

I also personally play EDH/commander, and have a bucket of decks. I'm a huge fan of it and really enjoy playing it.

You can very reasonably buy the premade EDH decks, and everyone in the group will have, more or less, the same power level. Pick what you find to be interesting and have fun with it battling your friends who pick what they find interesting.

There are a few extra rules to remember about commander, but it's not a big deal and it can be picked up fast.
