So you can choose between

Non-replacable battery

Or

AAs
Rechargeable AAs
Rechargeable battery pack

All of which are significantly cheaper than replacing the controller

"Hurr this is still just to sell battery packs though"

Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable AA's & AAA's FTW!

I can swap out a fresh set of AA's / AAA's in < 60 seconds and get back to gaming.

I'd rather not have to be plugged in if I'm low on power.

It's not hard, and many years down the line when you want to use that controller, you can get Fresh AA's / AAA's that will work with it.

You won't have battery issues like I do with old Sony SIXAXIS / DS3's with ancient batteries that have a hard time holding a charge for more than a week.

And what do you do when the battery pack loses most of its original charge?

I have a DualShock 3 that I had the battery replaced in, before that the battery would last minutes

I still don't have issues with any of my Wii U Pros

I barely have to charge them and it's easy to plug them into my PC USB ports when they need it

I don't see the benefit of half the lifespan on rechargeable AAs that will require more steps to get them out, put them in a charger, and put some other ones in

LifeSpan would be better with AA's given the default battery that Sony put inside the DualShock 3.

https://www.batterymart.com/p-gbasp-16li-sony-dualshock-3-battery.html
3.7V @ 570 mAh

3x Sanyo Eneloops with AA's at 1.2V 1900 mAh and some minor circuitry to regulate the voltage and accumulate some of that extra power to make it to 3.7V should do the trick.

1900 mAh > 570mAh

Eneloop Pro's have 2,600 mAh

Yeah I never got what the big deal about having an internal battery is. Ive always had rechargeable packs for my controllers and its never an issue, and they are usually pretty cheap.

Why would you go with the pro over the non-pro version? Seems like the pro gives you less lifetime charges.

I love how the whole argument is its so players have a choice.

Ok so if it''s all about choice, then that means the rechargable battery pack comes with the system, right?
Oh no, let me guess, its still like the XBOX360 days where you have to buy that, and it probably sucks within 2 years.

I'm happy with it. Started playing PS4 last year and holy fuck the controllers die fast. Had to buy an extra one so I could just swap between them when charging one. Xbox One controllers last a lot longer and aren't an inconvenience when they die.

Rechargeable AAs ftw

Also Dollar General Alkaline AA 20-pack for $6 ftw

Give it a few years, and the battery will start performing like garbage and it'll be a pain in the ass to replace because you're going to have to disassemble the DS4 just to put in a new battery.

That's why I gave up on those "Lithium Ion" Battery packs.

They suck in the end compared to good Rechargeable AA's / AAA's like Sanyo Eneloops.

20-pack for $6 = $0.30 per AA.

Or you can recharge the Eneloops for $0.04 per recharge.

Ergo, you're more environmentally friendly and fiscally efficient.

If you buy a Solar Powered AA Recharger, the cost of Charging is effectively free for life after you pay for the cost of the Solar Powered Charger.

Ive never in my life even thought this was an issue, for any console controller. Its just a neutral difference thats probably a wash in cost over time.

How many AAs would it take to last 6+ years of average play? I know I always get the battery packs for Xbox controllers so I wouldnt know. If its a net difference of $10-20, its probably a wash if youre savvy about getting a new controller (trade+deal=$10-15).

The only time I cared to bother was more out of curiosity and customizing my controller (I mixed the top and bottom from two different colored controllers). I had a DS3 battery die and I was into doing stuff myself at the time, bought a cheap replacement battery, took it apart, and put it in. Worked fine for years, still around somewhere in storage and looked cool.

Ive has three controllers for PS4, one I got with the OG, one with Pro, and a third blue I bought as an extra. The OG one I traded in for $24 at GameStop for cash, and got the third one for $35...so essentially a new battery for $11 if you look at it from net cost.

Technically, I think Im up in money over 6+ years of having PS4 controllers than if Id bought a battery pack or used AAs.
