I might be getting confused her, but I'm going to assume the premise of my question is accurate.

If Catholics believe that you can only confess to God through the intermediary of a priest, then why can you pray without any, you know..."assistance"? Isn't this a double standard?

Its pretty much used for mortal (serious) sins.

The RCC believes you cannot officially partake in the other sacraments unless you seek forgiveness and an ordained priest absolves you. They also believe you shouldnt die without a mortal sin absolved as that could interfere with direct entrance into Heaven.

Because the Catholic Church likes to keep tabs on its members, and what better way than to make them tell them what's going on by telling them that if they fail to confess any "mortal" sin that they would go to hell if they died then and there.

So I'm just gonna dodge this question ask the opposite question: why do Protestants even have clergy or go to church if your relationship with God can be personal?

I would say to be connected, like you cut a branch of a tree off and for awhile it is green then after some time it withers and dies.
