Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

I feel like the Persona cast gets a bit overrated in versus topics. I mean, personas are cool and all, but they're being summoned by ordinary teenagers (except Aigis), which means you only have to take out an ordinary teenager to win.

Though it might not matter in a 1v1 if Joker's persona can keep the opponent busy.

Also SMT immunities are pretty wild and I wouldn't be surprised if Joker has a persona that can flat-out null or absorb a lot of Zenobia's arsenal.

Yeah, depending how much that sort of thing is considered to count, he could just bring personas that null/repel/absorb wind and physical, then it's only a matter of time until he wins. And as a wind blade, Zenobia would probably be weak to Bufu spells.

But if we don't include gameplay mechanics that make Joker completely immune to things, that'd even things up maybe. Once Zenobia gets serious, she's capable of essentially one shotting a monster that left the entire main party of Xenoblade 2 wondering if they could win, though it did just get blasted away Team Rocket style instead of blown up Saitama style.

For now I'm just gonna assume Joker has immunities and stuff and say

I like this in general unless the game supports it in some way other than gameplay, otherwise you can get arguments like "Mario can run into his opponent with a star for an instant kill"

Joker casually bringing out personas that make him immune to everything his opponent can do feels kind of the same as that to me, and it's just not very fun

imo p5 mc is a far bigger step up on yu narukami in general. joker has plenty of athletic feats in 5.

Personally, I tend to see gameplay as part of a game character's canon unless it's contradicted by plot (e.g., phoenix downs in FF7, or Street Fighter Dan's gameplay power level versus his plot power level). So I take immunities pretty seriously.

But I don't know how persona switching works in P5. Can you switch on the fly? Joker doesn't know ahead of time that he's fighting a wind opponent.

Anyway, Xenoblade has much higher power level then Persona, the characters there can casually blow up continents and shit. While Zenobia has not done anything of the sort, her combat abilities are similar to those who have. Zenobia is also a Blade which are pretty hard to actually kill.
Joker is just a kid with a cool pet he can summon and he will get disemboweled pretty quickly by Zenobia's big-ass anime axe.

how would Joker know to bring a wind immunity persona before the match?

okay I haven't played persona 5 specifically but based on my understanding of the series, wouldn't he need to go back to the 'velvet room' or something similar to change his persona set up? it doesn't seem like he'd be able to do that in the middle of a battle since you can't do that in the middle of battles.

Fair point. Which personas Joker has and what skills are on them is unknown. If it were only, say, Satanael, I actually think Zenobia could win since fighting giant monsters is what she loves to do.

But yeah, that's how it works in P5 too. Still need to go to the Velvet Room to change your persona loadout.

I have a grasp of both of their abilities and their overall levels of power. it's true that we don't know exactly what persona that Joker will have equipped, but let's face it... if you're going into battle against an unknown enemy, you are NOT bringing a specific wind immunity set up. he'd probably bring something that is more general and more likely to apply in any given situation, since he doesn't know what he is walking into.

that's not going to be enough to make up for the gap in power, in my view.
