No, modern Western governments are not literally segregating and killing minorities, but anyone that belongs to a minority group experiences things that the majority group doesn't understand. No one is experiencing daily hate crimes, but when you aren't "normal" there is just this mentality where people treat you differently. It might even happen with good intentions sometimes, but at the end of the day, you're still part of the "other" group. Some life experience and the ability to feel empathy completely changes your worldview.
