https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/31/21408861/fbi-doorbell-camera-police-search-surveillance-warning-document

Federal Bureau of Investigation documents warned that owners of Amazons Ring and similar video doorbells can use the systems which collect video footage sometimes used to investigate crimes in order to watch police instead.

The Intercept spotted the files in the BlueLeaks data trove aggregated from law enforcement agencies. One 2019 analysis describes numerous ways police and the FBI could use Ring surveillance footage, but it also cites new challenges involving sensor- and camera-equipped smart home devices. Specifically, they can offer an early warning when officers are approaching a house to search it; give away officer locations in a standoff; or let the owner capture pictures of law enforcement, presenting a risk to their present and future safety.

These are partly hypothetical concerns. The standoff issue, for instance, was noted in a report about motion-activated panoramic cameras. But the FBI points to a 2017 incident where agents approached the home of someone with a video doorbell, seeking to search the premises. The resident wasnt home but saw them approach by watching a remote video feed, then preemptively contacted his neighbor and landlord about the FBIs approach. He may also have been able to covertly monitor law enforcement activity with the camera.

Oh no poor babies they can spy on us but we can't spy on them

Those are issues that are realistically going to become more prevalent as time goes on and smart house kind of systems become common, as is noted directly after where you cut the article off.

This isnt necessarily more information than a security camera would capture. But doorbells like the Ring or Google Nest Hello are pitched as more mainstream devices

What is your problem with law enforcement agencies acknowledging and discussing that internally?

thats an easy fix, just bring a wifi signal jammer. most of those systems run off of a wireless network, and its not like the police are going to arrest themselves for breaking FCC laws...

some can be, but many aren't. ring doorbell is either powered off the mains or with a battery pack and it uses wifi to connect to your internet.

Ha. All the DIY Youtube videos I've seen must have chosen the wired versions. I guess securing a camera with two screws didn't seem compelling enough for them.

makes more sense then the battery pack, but my house didn't have the wireing for a doorbell and i didn't see the point of running wires myself so i use the battery pack and just charge it every 3 weeks or so. eventually i'll probably just set up something myself, seen a need idea using rasberry pi cameras, and that'll require actual wiring.

Law enforcement should be increasingly aware that they are often under serveillance and that this footage can be used to hold them accountable.

FBI is concerned about this because they are big in the habit of covert searches. Meaning, they specifically choose times when you aren't home to rifle through your belongings.

think the bigger worry would be surveillance. peoples memories are shit, but a video of the same car with the same person loitering outside your house/business/whatever for days on end will surely tip you off.

Yeah both of my rings are hard wired to the house but that's just to power them. They're still running on wifi

Exactly what I was implying. I've read details on how they conduct their ops. They are sometimes very creative with them. That all goes to south though if you are able to monitor them. Then again, some of the technology they have is far in advance of whats out there commercially, meaning they do have countermeasures to this. But they aren't infallible, and have been caught numerous times by property owners (criminals of course, but still).
