It used to be $2 to get an ID, but now that they have to be the Real ID the state upped the cost to $8. On the plus side your ID is also good for 10 years.

I have no problem with requiring an ID to vote but we need to make them free to people who can't afford them. Also, before they go into effect for elections we need to give notice like now. Hey, in 4 years everyone will need an ID. (Assuming they do it for the presidential elections next time)

ID, even if it was free, is 100% not needed.

"Voter fraud", at least in the UK and USA is basically non existent so what benefit does it actually give?

I agree, if ID will be required then they should be free to obtain. Otherwise you are making someone pay for something that is a right.

I have no problem with requiring an ID to vote, but if that is a requirement then there absolutely needs to be a way to provide people photo IDs for voting without cost. The voting rights act has long established that having to pay fees in order to vote is unconstitutional.

My whole problem with the "Voter ID" push is the obvious voter suppression that Republicans keep trying to include in laws under the guise of voter ID.

Those happen to be the hours I work. For something so essential it's ridiculous they aren't open from like, 7am-10pm and on Saturday. I have to use PTO to get to the DMV.

There really isn't a reason why your voter registration card can't have a photo on it. Boom there's your ID, the only thing that may make it difficult to get is that you can't register online, my mail, or those door to door people.

People in these circumstances are unfortunate, but far from the majority. And even if we limit it to minoitys most live in the city with easy access to a DMV be it local transport, uber/Lyft or a friend/SO. And dont tell me their to poor or some shit. If most poor can afford alcohol and cigarettes from time to time they can save up enough a ID.

Going "It's unfortunate" isn't good enough

Either provide them an ID or don't require one to vote.

Don't say it's so vitally important that you have to have one but you have to pay and those that struggle or can;t get one are just "unfortunate" so who cares.

That's unconsitutional

So rights don't matter if the people affected are a minority?

There's no evidence that voter fraud has ever been a real problem, why is preventing it more important than making sure everyone is able to exercise their right to vote?

I had to bring a handful of documents in order to get a Real ID. Some documents I wouldn't have had if my mother didn't save them for me lol so there's definitely more to getting an ID than just paying a small fee that would prevent people from obtaining one and I doubt that will ever change. Especially because they're moving in the complete opposite direction with requirements.

Voter ID laws prevents more people from voting more than it prevents any kind of voting fraud.

No system is perfect and some people will inevitably through the cracks, which I accept, but you dont. Scrapping a working system for a inferior one that will lead to massive voter fraud to appease a very, VERY small sub group is feelz good nonsense of the highest caliber.

Voting rights the same as guns under certain circumstances are restricted and or taken away on a regularly basis. So just stating its 'unconstitutional' is not a counter argument.

Guns are taken away from a person if they've committed a crime with them. Republican voter suppression efforts are simply because they just don't want certain people to vote.

So why break the current one when voter fraud is a proven non issue?

In 2018, in the UK there was a gigantic ONE.

Yes. One. Singular. One person.

Who got convicted of it, and yet our government is pushing hard to have ID's come in. Bringing this in for the crime of one person is pretty suspect and should surely make any sane person wonder what the real reason is.

Looks like 17 don't even ask, an additional 15 request without photo requirement, and 10 more request with a photo. So 42/51 (includes DC). Half ask for ID, but don't require it. Only 8 have strict voter ID laws. All the territories seem to have no restrictions.
