Beat it with like 50-something shines. So I havent seen ones like the pachinko one yet lol but:

It's so dumb that they gate you to 50 specific shines to unlock the final level. It makes the secret shines feel pointless during the main adventure.

Blue coins are bad and should feel bad.

Yoshi's feel completely useless. LITERALLY all they give you is a flutterjump and the abilty to clean those weird orange marker drawings. Plus they die in water......in a game full of water lol. Yoshis feel more like a hassle than an exciting powerup.

The level themes are almost the same and pretty repetitive. Plus only 7 levels sucks

A bunch of the shines feel kind of janky or cryptic. Like the hotel bathhouse one or the watermelon one.

Overall it's fine but I doubt I would replay this unlike 64 or Galaxy. It just isn't that good >_>

I suggest you start using IGN's check list for blue coins. It's a huge pain to figure out which ones you have, especially since such are available to you varies in each episode.

Also when going for the poison river shine, I suggest you learn an easy out of bonds clip so you can walk there underwater with Yoshi rather than deal with the boat bull shit. Another warning about that shine: if you fail, kill yourself. Do NOT go through the green pipe at the end since you'll have to get your ass there all over again.

Yeah I intentionally avoided every blue coin so I could follow a guide to collect them later >_> Blue coins so dumb. Thanks for the tips!

It wasn't a great game when it came out. It was vastly disappointing succeeding Mario 64. The controls were enough to piss me off into quitting it twice.

It wasn't until a few years ago that meme youtubers suddenly put it on some nostalgic pedestal for unknown reasons

imo the blue coins are an excellent idea they just weren't executed that well. Some kind of in-game list where each one is numbered would have made them perfect

Otherwise I love Sunshine a lot. Gotta touch on this point tho:

This is one of my favorite parts. The world is cohesive. You can see a lot of other stages in the distance from almost any stage, but they were still able to make each stage have a distinct style despite their close proximity. World design in Sunshine is top notch imo

It's actually 49 since you can just skip the first Shine in Bianco Hills and immediately go fight Petey Piranha for the second. Which unlocks Shine #3's mission with no problems.

unless you absolutely love the game do not bother with getting all blue coins. it is not worth it

I wasn't in love with it as a kid, but playing it now I really enjoyed it. Delfino plaza is so lively, and Mario's movement feels so fluid in comparison to Galaxy. The game really demands that you make the most out of the moveset available to you, in a way that I appreciate.

It's a good antidote to the issues I had with Odyssey; I think the balance of platforming and exploration is a lot better.

gelato beach and pianta village are pathetic, tiny levels with minimal platforming
pinna park is the only interesting platforming area in the game and it's fucking tiny because everything in this game is insanely undercooked and undersized

the hidden area challenges aren't even hard besides maybe the noki bay shell one being actually remotely difficult

This I gotta disagree with. I really loved how they ran with the tropical island theme. It was nice to get something different from "Here's da grass level. Here's da ice level. Here's da ocean level."

Yes but you can choose which ones to do and also you need a lot of the optional ones to unlock all the content.

One thing that hasn't been touched on ITT is that the game never tells players what's required to progress. Unless I missed something, there's nothing in the game explaining that you need to beat Shadow Mario all those times to open Corona Mountain. There's nothing letting you know when new levels will open up (though I quickly realized it was after every 5 shines). I had the strategy guide when I was a kid, so I didn't notice this at the time.

SM64 had big markers telling you how many stars were required to unlock certain doors and such, Galaxy and Odyssey were both clear about what you had to do to advance.

I think it's for the better that they went back to making things clear, but there is a sort of charm in playing where you don't know where or when something new is gonna pop up.
