Even then, some experts suggest masks might become a normal thing for everyone until the next generation who has never lived through the COVID-19 pandemic stops that trend.

For example, in the article it talks about a person's grandparents who lived through the Great Depression and how they still acted like they were living in those times even though everyone in the U.S. got through it.

For people living in 2020, masks, refusing to handshake someone, and stocking up on toilet paper could be a normal thing for them. However, for everyone else born later in life it could be a weird thing their grandparents do.

Another thing is that the virus could still stick around forever and could just be another thing that makes humans sick in the winter.

The article points out that even though people still get sick and thousands die each year from the flu virus, people would still go out in large groups, go to work sick, and so on. The question is, how many COVID-19 related deaths are people willing to accept for things to be considered "normal" again?

This was always a weird phenomenon. At the very start of the panic, I'd go to Walgreens and they'd have a full shelf of bottled water and canned food but all the toilet paper was stripped bare.

Depends heavily on your state. Other than bars being closed and masks my state is already largely returned to normal in terms of going about life tasks. And bars with full restaurants have a busy nightlife currently.

I always stocked up on TP. Funny enough it positioned me quite well when the shortages occurred.

In general, the more uptake of masking, the more "normal" everything else can be.
Anything short of an immunisation is unlikely to make a meaningful change to the level of restrictions that need to be used. Unless tests are developed that can reliably detect early, or we can demonstrate treatments that actually help (So far all we have is dexamethasone for hospitalised people.)

This is really tricky though, because it basically requires either cycles of imposing and lifting restrictions, or somehow balancing to a constant reproductive number of exactly 1.0. Targeting an acceptable number isn't much cheaper than an elimination strategy for this reason.
