The first recorded history of most games in the world can be usually down to two things:
  1. The royalty at the time being fans of the game.
  2. The game being banned by the local government.
In either case, that's usually when the knowledge of many games entered historical record.

Like he said, modern stuff is easier to track.

It really comes down to the fact that back in medieval times or antiquity, nobody wrote shit down unless it was about the folks in charge.
