Demon's Souls checkpoint / bonfire system with how it introduced the mechanic of losing resources on death that you can recover by making it back to them without dying. checkpoints were nothing new but that idea that after death you permanently lose resources if you die again before recovering them. adds lovely tension to the gameplay after a death.
