Current Events > I realised this week, I know almost nothing about Chicago, a major US city.

One of the most important cities in the US, really. Basically up there with NYC, LA, and Washington. But I know very little about it. I know where it is in the country, and I know there's quite a few people living there, but little else.

What are some important details about it?

In the 90s, the local basketball team Chicago Bulls utterly dominated
The best smoked fish restaurant Calumet Fisheries is there
The tallest building used to be called the Sears building
O' Hare airport is a hub for United and American airlines
Midway airport is a focus city for Southwest Airlines
It is hugely democratic
It is the largest city in the midwest

I visited a friend there and I was surprised by a couple things

1) it has a huge beach, that lake may as well be the ocean

2) "south side" is this massive area of slums and it's exactly like you'd picture in the movies with black gang wars, and it's so big! I can't believe this exists in the US and we ignore it

3) the downtown is fine there's nothing special about it. I thought it'd be all crazy like Hong Kong or NYC but it's not

that's most of what i know. I was there once for like an hour when I was 10 years old. we were driving across the country and stopped in for a moment. but we didn't really do anything that I remember.

my brother's wife is from chicago though.

Brutal winters, hot summers, very sports driven, super segregated both racially and economically, around 500 murders a year, one of the busiest airports in America, started as a bustling trade town settled smack dab in middle America among plenty of rivers, very democratic, pizza hot dogs and Italian beef, I think the second largest polish population outside of Poland's capital, high taxes on everything, lots of good colleges, running amok with corrupt politicians as is the whole of Illinois.
