If its the non fruiting part of a plant that is not the seed itself then its a veggie, if its a seed that is used for its starch content its a grain, if its a seed that is consumed from a tree then its a nut. In culinary terms, the simplest way to look at it is that a vegetable is a savory plant (that isn't a grain) and a fruit is a sweet one (there's some room for debate in there, but that basic understanding will be enough for most people).
