Been watching The Crown (a show about the life of Queen Elizabeth) and the PMs resign like all the time. Churchill, Eden, Macmillan, Wilson all resign. It seems the only ones who didn't were Atlee and Thatcher*, who got voted out.

Even today, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May all resigned.

Meanwhile in America, the only president to resign is Nixon.

*Speaking of Thatcher, how long do PMs serve? She was PM for 11 years and still had to be voted out instead of her term being up.

In part because the role of Prime Minister isn't so rigid and not who the public votes for. The party can get rid of their leader and vote for a new one "whenever" they want.

I'd say something about accountability but lol at that.

US could certainly use that system.

No term limits

If they keep winning elections and their party holds the confidence of the House then they can stay in power

So Thatcher could have theoretically served into the 90's, damn.

No we didn't. He was PM from 1926-1930 and again from 35-48

Lol I always think the gap in the 30s was like a few months to a year for some reason

Because unlike the US you don't vote for the PM. In theory anyway

You vote for your local MP. And the leader of the party with the most MPs after the election is PM.

So there's no point in "Refusing to concede" They're only in charge because their own party recongizes them as the leader, if the party no longer likes them then they have no leg to stand on before stepping down

I'll grant you that in reality though, people vote with PM in mind. The conservatvies dominated the last election with an 80 seat majority because the country for reasons I cannot fathom absolutely loves Boris Johnson and his idiotic anti-science stances.
