In 2014, Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast were caught throttling Netflix traffic. Netflix actually paid them to stop throttling traffic. Netflix then passed the cost of those payments onto their consumers by increasing the subscription price. The price never came back down afterward.

Without net neutrality regulations, we're essentially just trusting that ISPs won't do that again.

Yeah, this is one of the things that has frustrated me the most about the state of the internet in the US. Modern fiber can reach 40 to 60 miles. There is a huge opportunity that would mean a ton of jobs to lay fiber all over the country and build and set up fiber hubs every 40 - 60 miles to service both cities and rural areas.

South Korea, while their infrastructure is much more vertical than ours would be, has spent at least a couple decades investing in their internet infrastructure. They've had speeds around 200 - 500 Mbps for a loooooooooooooooong time now.

My understanding is that the FCC consists of 5 board members: 3 appointed by the president, 2 by the opposition party(usually by the party's leader in the Senate, IIRC). Pai realizes he's going to lose his chairmanship and wants to collect his reward for doing the bidding of the big TelComs.
Maybe Biden will appoint some one decent, or maybe he'll appoint some one who sucks as a political favor. I can't imagine Joe Biden is terribly invested in the fate of the Internet.

Yeah, people were peeing their pants and then nothing bad ever came of it. Just your typical fear mongers online.

Its because governments (well, state governments) have been fighting it for the last few years, its not like Telecoms could immediately do whatever they want after how publicly repealing net neutrality went.

At the end of October the FCC officially doubled down on Net neutrality, and federal bills trying to retain some level of net neutrality have been repeatedly shut down/ ignored by the senate so it can't pass.

So we haven't had anything bad happen, because the states are still fighting for it. And they're losing, so unless Biden does something with his FCC appointees, its still going to end and in the next few years everything will actually start going to hell.

the problem is, we've seen how a pro-neutrality stance got insanely politicized. ffs, there are still a ton of people who think NN is 6 years old. Restoring NN by EO is just going to backfire again. Having the FCC restore it is better, but it's really going to take some strong, preferably bipartisan, congressional support. and i just don't think the people there right now understand the issue anywhere near enough to fight off all the lobbyist propaganda.

Yup. A huge part of the problem here is that most people, especially our politicians, have no idea what net neutrality actually is.

And a troubling sign in recent months is just how little so many people understand about so many things. They don't know what it is so they somehow assume said thing is political in nature. Then they just go with whatever dumb thing they heard about it, whether it's true or not.

As has been said many times ITT, net neutrality is a principle that has been in existence for decades. It only became regulation after ISPs were repeatedly caught violating those principles at the expense of their customers.

It gives people legal recourse if an ISP does that again.

If ISPs don't do that kind of thing again, it'll be fine. That means they're choosing to follow meet neutrality principles on their own.

If they do it again and no laws in that regard are in place, then it's a much harder fight to get them to stop.

The misinformation campaign was impressive. My buddy, who is normally pretty well informed, someone got sucked into it.

He thought the idea behind NN was there has to be a balance of positive and negative websites about any given subject. Which of course is incredibly stupid. And does sound like NN isn't something to worry about.
