City officials in San Francisco have banned all tobacco smoking inside apartments, citing concerns about secondhand smoke. But lighting up a joint inside? Thats still allowed.

The Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 Tuesday to approve the ordinance making San Francisco the largest city in the country to ban tobacco smoking inside apartments, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The original proposal sought to ban residents from smoking marijuana in their apartments, but supervisors voted to exclude marijuana after cannabis activists said the law would take away their only legal place to smoke. Its illegal under state law to smoke cannabis in public places.

Unlike tobacco smokers who could still leave their apartments to step out to the curb or smoke in other permitted outdoor smoking areas, cannabis users would have no such legal alternatives, said Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, who wrote the amendment to exempt cannabis.

San Francisco now joins 63 California cities and counties with such a ban.

Those against the ban argued that it infringed on their rights inside their homes. Supporters said its important to protect the health of nonsmokers particularly low-income residents who live in dense apartment buildings.

Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 people per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Department of Public Health will be responsible for enforcing the new law. Under the ordinance, the department must first try to educate violators and help smokers quit. Repeat offenders could be fined $1,000 a day but can not be evicted for a smoking violation.

Like, how is this even enforceable? People can't be busted on smell alone and cops aren't going to get search warrants for cigarettes.

I would think that the practical effects of this are landlords are going to claim they smell cigarette smoke at the end of a lease and put tenants into a position where they potentially face fines for complaining about not getting their safety deposit back.

Weed when burnt raw absolutely sticks to everything like cigarette smoke and lingers. There are also plenty of delivery methods for medical patients that don't involve letting out carcinogens.

My apartments did this a long time ago.

Everyone just goes outside to smoke. Its super damaging to the apartment and the neighbors complain.

My dad smoked indoor forever and we had to clean his house after his stroke. It was stained every where and it smelled. I doubt apartments want to deal

Not like cigarette smoke. The tar sticks to things and will leave a residue. Yeah, if you smoke weed in a place itll smell like weed to those who arent used to the smell for a little, but the smell doesnt linger as long long term and wont damage things like cigarette smoke does.

This doesnt mean that there isnt a smell (weed is def worse smelling short-term) or that weed smoke is healthy for you like what you think were saying, but dont talk about things you know nothing about.

My parents smoke both fairly regularly and in the same spots (ie they smoke weed in the same spot and smoke cigarettes in a different spot, but the same spot they always smoke cigarettes). You can tell where they smoke cigarettes; you cant tell where they smoke weed.

If you believe weed smoke lingers like cigarette smoke, Reefer Madness is probably something that you think is real.

Like I said, it can linger short term (especially if someone just smoked flower), but it doesnt stay on shit as long or as damaging as cigarette smoke does. You literally have no idea what youre talking about.

Also marijuana has medicinal benefits and is legal medicinally in California. If you ban it inside when its already banned in public places, where can people that need to take it medicinally actually take it. Use your brain.

It doesnt leave long-term damage with long term smells. Arguably worse smelling in the short term, but it doesnt damage things like cigarettes do in the long term.
