A teenager who told police there was nothing they could do when they caught him breaking lockdown rules has been fined. Nariah Ellison, 18, was spotted with a group of people in Manchester city centre during the first coronavirus lockdown back in April.

They were approached by a police officer at around 7pm who asked why they were out and reminded them of the restrictions in place. Ellison told the officer he didnt care and that there was nothing the police could do, the citys magistrates court heard.

Prosecutor Nicola Morgan said the teenager was warned that if he failed to comply, the officer would have no option but to issue a fine. He was then given a fixed penalty notice after refusing to provide his personal details.

When he failed to pay it, he was hauled to court. Ellison, from Moss Side, appeared before magistrates on Friday. He pleaded guilty to an offence of leaving or being outside of a place where living in England, without reasonable excuse, during the coronavirus emergency period under the Health Protection Regulations. The teenager was fined 40 and ordered to pay a further 46 in court costs and a 34 surcharge.

Chair of the bench Richard Blackman told him: The officer gave you the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty notice but you are now going to have to pay a bigger penalty because you simply didnt want to comply. Do you understand why you should have complied? You must have seen many people unwell and the need for the restrictions to stop the virus spreading?

Mr Blackman added: We have noted a little bit of remorse there, not a huge amount but a little bit. You understand why your actions were wrong thats the important thing. When you are told not to be somewhere, then its clear you shouldnt be.
