Imagine being a US citizen and having to occasionally spend money to maintain proof that you are one and allowed to receive all the benefits of being one.

I guess there is the issue of taking your photo for the ID, but I'm sure we could figure that out.

Even if it was possible to maintain such an enormous database w/ any semblance of accuracy, the IDs would never be "free". Instead of paying for them at the DMV, they would just add the cost to the state taxes you pay automatically every year.

You're describing your social security card, which is an ID everyone can get for free.

Not that I think this is the reason the government doesn't do that, some of the above posts point that out, but I think it shoudl be noted that some people may not want such IDs in the first place. I don't think it should be mandatory.

The free part, I could go for that. You want one, go get it, fed pays for it. But it automatically being sent to us, like we just get it in the mail and we have the ID automatically, nah.

if you're the type of person that doesn't want a free id there's a good chance you're also the type of person living in the woods with no postal service anyway...

Yes quite possibly, and that should be doable.

Hold up let me vote, buy alcohol, and apply for a home with a social security card. And it's not free if you need a new one

You mean the database that already exists because otherwise the entire system would be pointless? And thanks for reminding me that taxes exist. I almost forgot that public roads and public safety aren't actually free. You really pwned me good.

This reminds of when I asked to scan someone's ID at work and they were like "I don't want them to know me". Too late for that, taxpaying citizen with government-issued ID card. He probably doesn't even use a VPN.

Wouldn't that make someone an illegal? Not that anything is stopping someone from living completely off the grid.
