Than they expect

And then if they finish early they can be like SURPRISE ITS ACTUALLY COMING OUT MONTHS EARLIER HAHA ARENT WE GREAT

Instead of giving an early date and constantly pushing things back and worrying people

I've wondered this too sometimes. I kind of wonder if the intention is to put pressure on the staff to meet the public deadline. They announce June 1, but internally they want March 1. The staff might feel less pressure if they know they won't need to announce a delay.

They can still announce a date early and have it come out late. Like say if someone announced a game will come out in 2022.

Also they could get some good will by saying "Since we're releasing this earlier than expected, all orders from new early release date to original release date will still receive pre-order benefits!"

Because releasing a half finished game out in time for the holiday season makes more money than releasing a finished game when it's ready in the middle of the year.

Then say the original planned release date is sometime around February to July. And then September/October be like "Actually it's coming out in early December!"

The new release date can still be 1-3+ months away or something

I think TC is talking about why do game devs give release dates that are like 3-7 years out.

Like for example God of War Ragnarok is announced for 2021, but obviously that is a 2022 game at the earliest. So why bother even showing a teaser?

Personally I like the Fallout 4 method, announce and show at E3 and release in November that year.

Because there's no reason to do that. There's no incentive for game companies to wait til the product is finished to release it. People keep buying broken and unfinished products and therefore companies will keep releasing broken and unfinished products.
