High end engineering schools. Other majors suck.

Private has a pool of around 20-30 high end colleges that are constantly being tossed around in the rankings. There are also major distinctions between bachelor degree program relevance and grad school relevance. The public is usually more interested in the former. You can also draw a line in the sand for liberal arts colleges, which occupy their own category. And the Ivy League is not the cream of the crop across the board in private. The University of Chicago easily outranks most of the League by itself, for example.

It's not stupid at all.

You can get a great education anywhere. In fact you'll probably get a better education in gen ed classes in community colleges because the class sizes are much smaller and you don't need the specialized equipment or facilities that only big universities have. But even then the education you get at a top ranked university isn't going to be any different than the education you get at an average university (public and private).

The difference is name recognition and who you can network with to further your career.
