That's the fucking worst. Having worked in retail I can confirm that they'll let someone go rather than deal with the litigation that might come from the offender potentially getting harmed.

I think back away and dont interfere is the best policy, but defending yourself against assault tosses that out the window. I guess if he didnt back away after, that could be grounds for termination, but still pretty shitty regardless.
