Board 8 > Not feeling it for Trails in the Sky the 3rd *possible spoilers

It was the only officially localized Trails game that I didn't play so I thought why not give it a shot since I enjoyed my time with every entry in the series from Trails FC to Cold Steel IV.

Now I am by no means the biggest fan of the series but I do like the games a lot. My biggest issues with the series would be its pacing and the gameplay being super run of the mill. When the series hits it's highs though it really nails which is my main incentive to play those games horrible pacing issues aside.

My Trails series ranking would be something like this
CSIII > SC > CSIV > CSII > CSI > FC

Not that FC is bad by any means but it felt more like a pilot episode of a huge series and mostly focused on world building so I can't fault it.

Now my main issue here with Trails 3rd is that it feels very much like an extended epilogue with fanfiction like side stories (which feels like the meat and potatoes of the game). The game kinda feels grindy in comparison to the rest of the series as well but I am fine with that since I enjoy grinding at times and it isn't over bearing by any means.

It's just that I'm in Chapter 4 right now and the game is feeling repetitive. I like the setting of Phantasma but the fact that everything is a glorified illusion makes it feel like lazy asspull storytelling. Game just feels like find sealing stone unlock next character, unlock next part of dungeon. Chapter finish rinse and repeat.

I'm probably gonna stick with it to the end despite my grievances but if someone comes here telling me it gets better might spark some motivation in me. This is the least interested I have been in playing a game in the series since I have started playing the series.

I don't know how far along the game I am. I'm in Chapter 4. Finished about 4 Star Doors, 2 Moon Doors (with 2nd episodes still left unfinished), 1 Sun Door so I'm guessing I am still in early game.

Problem is every other trails game have hooked me somewhat by Chapter 4 and about 13 hours even FC and CS1, the two games with the slowest starts in the series (understandably so since both are the first game in its series).

I even did a series recap on youtube to prepare myself for 3rd since its been a while since last I played SC so not remembering the previous games is not even an issue here.

Is it the consensus least favorite game in the series for people here? I know board 8 has one of the biggest Trails fanbase.

Chapter 4 is probably more like mid-game. Without double-checking what happens when, I think you're coming up on some things starting to come together relatively soon.

I don't think so though I don't know if we've ever really compiled such a thing here. For me personally it's not only my favorite game in the series but my favorite game ever so... not me, at least. >_>

The side stuff is pretty much the main draw of the game, yeah. Main plot does eventually have some pretty good stuff near the end though.

It's a very polarizing game. Some people love it for the character stuff. I thought it was enjoyable enough but wouldn't put it above anything except maybe FC (since I agree the premise is lol and Kevin/Ries < Estelle/Joshua).

It is my least favorite in the series, yes, however the story content is very much worth seeing.

Azure, SC, CS3 tend to be the 3 most well received I think.

FC and CS2 seem to be the least well received.

That's the general feeling I get online. I agree that most of the series other than maybe CS3 has pacing issues.

I honestly loved all three games in the trilogy.

Taking a bit of a break before starting Crossbell since I just got done binging three games lol
