When is the next Shadowbringers MSQ patch?

Unless it's super soon, I don't think I will have an issue catching up. Another 2 weeks or so I'd assume.

By the way, Stormblood is probably a good time to start leveling up a side class or two if you're interested in doing so. A few roulettes a day will go a long way.

Been thinking this, since I'm already at 69 and just beat Susanoo (MEGA PARRY). Thinking Samurai, maybe Dancer for the extra 10 level head start. Don't want to get invested in tanking or healing until I've caught up.

i will say its really useful to have a tank/healer leveled, just for random things. that said you're leveling different stuff than RDM (melee and ranged vs caster), so it's not a huge loss to go samurai or dancer.

i don't think it'd be bad to get a tank going though, they're pretty useful if you ever decide to join hunt trains at max level so you can guarantee full credit even if a party you join has people asleep at the wheel. this sentence probably doesn't make sense to you yet so don't worry about it too much if you think you'd have more fun with dps classes.

Healing is an entirely different ballgame, but tanking in non-Extreme/Savage content is basically just like playing a melee DPS while getting to ignore some mechanics. You could start tanking whenever and be fine.

The only melee DPS I feel comfortable writing a quick guide for is Ninja, so if someone else wants to chime in about Samurai, feel free.

Worth mentioning that you will want to prioritize getting a tank, healer, caster, and physical (melee or ranged) to 80 for some extra lore in Shadowbringers that imo is totally worth it. No rush to do so, you can do the quests at any point after completing the story, just a heads up.

Also they said they are going to use this same system for Endwalker, but actually split melee and ranged physical for 5 questlines.

I watched most of that presentation from a few weeks ago recently, skipping around spoilery stuff. Saw that part where they're going to be turning Astro into pure healer and get rid of the barrier stuff and swapping between the heal roles.

Isn't that...the entire point of Astro? How exactly would that work?

In my opinion the individual class quest storylines tend to end on a solid note at Level 70, and anything beyond that would have felt like artificially extending those narratives.

Actually not too much complaining! Most criticism I see is just about how they replaced job quests, which is fair. But overall I think this is better; the quality of the job storylines are HIGHLY variable between jobs and even within jobs between expansions. For every Dark Knight (legit one of the best storylines in the entire game) you have a White Mage (THE TAINT). 5.0 gave us 4 uniformly good questlines and a great bonus for doing them all.

You do get epilogue quests at 80 that are generally pretty good, I wouldn't mind if they made them a bit more involved in the future but I think it's a good model.

Dark Knight storyline is in the top 1% of writing in the entire game, not just side quests. Conversely, when I was leveling White Mage, at one point I told my friend "all I've been doing is going around purifying the taint. Look, I'm going to talk to this guy, I bet he's going to say something unimportant then go tell me to purify more taint." He did.

My general class quest storyline ranking from what I've played so far would be:

Top:
Dark Knight

Great:
Rogue

Mostly Good:
Ninja, Machinist

Not Bad:
Red Mage, Pugilist, Samurai (50-60), Gunbreaker

Sub-Par:
Arcanist, Summoner, Marauder, Warrior, Lancer, Archer, Thaumaturge

Bad:
Samurai (60-70), Conjurer, White Mage

I hated the 50/60 NIN storyline tbqh, but part of that was the Rogues were too good. Conversely the ONLY good part of the NIN quests is the comic relief antagonist who shows up occasionally. 60-70 was way better because they bring the Rogues back and take the absolute piss out of the Ninja stuff.

My favorite non-DRK job quests are AST and MCH pretty easily. They are good all the way through which very few jobs manage. SCH and SMN are also solid, they can drag a bit but SCH's is cute and both have some neat lore buried in them.

Also I rag on CNJ/WHM but I do have to give a special shoutout to the character of Sylphie who has blessed this game with one of its best memes

and the 60-70 quests are honestly pretty good and not only give her a redemption arc but rightfully shit on the Padjal who suck ass

OK, did a leveling duty before bed for Dancer.

That was fun! Being able to walk around all the time is wild! I've literally never tried anything but casters so far.

Ranged physical role actions seem fairly...unimportant? Other than that quick insta heal, but that cooldown is wild for it.

That quick instant heal will save your life.

Ranged Physical DPS are generally considered the easiest role to play due to the freedom of movement you mentioned. They deal with mechanics more easily than any other role type. As a result, their optimal damage is a fair bit lower than the other DPS roles...which honestly barely matters in the grand scheme of things. In casual content, enrage timers (a.k.a. mechanics that kill everyone if a certain amount of damage isn't dealt in a specific period of time) are rare, and when they do pop up, are designed to be able to be cleared by people who aren't very good so that everyone who plays FF14 can see the story. In hardcore content, enrage timers become a much bigger deal, but harsh, party-wiping mechanics become an even bigger deal, and the flexibility of a Dancer or Machinist or Bard is reeeeally nice to have in any team comp, cause you can't deal damage when you're dead.

protip: when in doubt about who would be the best dance partner (ie, who does the most damage), a quick way to gauge is check who has the most hp (out of dps). not 100% but a decent rule of thumb if you don't know relative class damages

but if they die a lot, feel free to revoke the partner privilege and move it elsewhere

I will mess around with the particulars, though I'm really not confused by this level 60 kit at all. With Samurai at 50, supposedly one of the easiest classes to play, I was pretty lost. That may just be me getting more comfortable with the game, though.

Most quick guides for ranged melee I'm seeing are saying to just hit role actions other than Second Wind and Pelotan whenever they're up and not think about them too hard.

Dancer is probably the single easiest job to pick up and play, though I wouldn't get discouraged from being overwhelmed by Samurai. I had to look up a few things when I unlocked it recently and while it does click fast it required knowing how melee classes tend to work in this game. They usually have a dps combo and a buff upkeep combo, and SAM is a bit weird because it has 3 combos instead of two.

You're probably reading an outdated guide. Some of them I think USED to do damage but do not anymore.

You really only need to pay attention to a few, besides the two you mentioned, and even those are pretty niche.

Arm's Length: This prevents knockback, and is the physical equivalent to Surecast on casters. You can use it to ignore certain mechanics that push you around. It's also a defensive ability for trash mobs on tanks due to the slow.

Head Graze: Is a silence, which allows you to interrupt enemy cast bars that flash red. Nothing in normal content tends to require this IIRC but you will find occasional uses for it here and there. Only tanks and ranged have silences, melee dps have stuns which are slightly different (enemies can be immune to it) so this is something that's part of those roles.

The other two are a heavy and a bind, which are so much more niche than even the two above they are essentially useless.

Edit: Also there is a secret ranged role action that is more important than literally all of these, and that's the damage mitigation. But instead of a generic role action varient they made it a "unique" job skill for all 3 roles, even though it does the same damn thing and they don't even stack with each other. On Dancer it's called Shield Samba. It reduces damage for the party by 10% for 15 seconds, so you basically use it when there's a big aoe hit incoming.
