Or is that just sort of the popular thing to say?

Work from home

Direct to streaming movies/death of the theater

Basically a giant boon to your life and for once being anti social was okay instead of like all the other years where it was frowned upon.

And yet everyone says it's a forgone conclusion we are all supposed to hate that year and fight hard to get the old normal back? I don't get it... The old normal sucked.

As far as I can tell... 2020 was a better year than anything that came before or likely will ever come after.

2021 is actually looking to be the worst year... As it's the year the majority of companies finally got their excuse to drag everyone back through daily traffic and lower their quality of life significantly. Basically, it's the year all the good things went away.

My job became more difficult with social distancing restrictions, I couldn't go back home to visit my family, and I wasn't able to go on many dates due to so many places being closed.

2020 was a relatively bad year for me.

Yes, it was a terrible year, probably the worst of my lifetime. It feels like a wasted year to me. Work and financially it was okay for me, I already worked from home most of the time so it was not anything new. I am fairly anti-social, but I enjoy going to concerts a lot and other conventions or festivals throughout the year. The lack of that showed me that I do need those social interactions or it can affect my mental health. I didn't have it nearly as bad as many others, while I missed concerts for example, those bands had a year of their profession basically wasted as far as the way they most often earn a living.

On top of that the politicization of everything including a pandemic just made it worse (speaking of the U.S.). The pandy should of been something that brought us together, but it further divided us.

Is it really that hard to imagine how it was for people that can't work from home? Or for people that actually enjoy seeing their family and/or have real friends to meet? Like, yeah, if you're some do-nothing university kid trying to shit out a movie studies degree or something it was probably awesome but 2020 was awful for a lot of people.

For me personally things have been dire for years and 2020 was no different. Maybe a little better with the government giving me money I wasn't expecting.

However products were more expensive to buy, or not available for purchase at all. Governments around the world became more authoritarian and restrictive of civil liberties. There's been more civil unrest. More dispute over whether said unrest was violent or peaceful. The news outlets are more aggressive in taking sides on social issues.

Gee millions dead, lots of people with permanent health conditions, not being able to spend time with family and friends for a year, millions of layoffs, the rich get richer, awful political issues, a populace where one half of the country genuinely hates the other half.

Why would anyone possibly think 2020 was a bad year?

2020 had long lasting impacts on how we as a culture do anything.
And yes, I see WFH as a negative. We should freely be able to go into the office or work from home any day of the week if our jobs allow for that.

2020 had staggering affects on global supply chains and there was huge cultural unrest, specifically around politics.

For years to come I am going to be very hesitant to go outside. Which is a pretty big negative for me.

Given we got a global pandemic yes. This year is better as vaccines are been given out and restrictions are slowly being lifted. Some good things came out of 2020 for me personally but overall it wasn't a year I care for. It however wasn't the worse year of my life.

My current WFH arrangement includes going into the office whenever I need to/see fit, and I expect that to continue once the office opens up more. You'll get many companies downsizing their office space moving forward rather than paying for space nobody's using, but the future of WFH being normalized is very much going to be an option, not a requirement. I don't think anyone's suggesting that nobody should be allowed to go into the office anymore.
