People say poor people eat fast food in the us. Are vegetables and fruits really that expensive compared to fast food?

Where i live $1 in local market can get you a few pieces of carrots, a bundle or either spinachs, bok choi or water spinach, which is good for a meal or 2, either stir fried or stewed and eaten with rice.

$1 in mc donald will probably get you a side dish, not even a chicken.

its not really the price its the availability.

you'll have fast food stacked up everywhere, but no decent markets in the poorest neighborhoods.

Poor neighborhoods don't have good grocery stores that sell fruits, veggies, etc. It's called a Food Desert. They end up "grocery shopping" at CVS.

Its more that certain neighborhoods have multiple fast food joints but no grocery stores for miles. Combined with a lack of public transportation, that death makes it impossible for some people to purchase fresh foods.

There also is the issue of lack of storage and/or prep space or even cooking apparatus.

Fresh produce inevitably has highly variable pricing based on what's in season. Per calorie, fast food is usually competitively priced. Plus fresh goes off.

But the other reason poorer people eat fast food is because it's fast. Someone who works a 50-60 hour week for less than the living wage doesn't want to then spend time cooking when they get home.

Oh yeah that really makes sense. Lack of Time + availability = nutrients disaster. It's so sad.
