It raised a shit ton and helped immensely, drastically helping with efforts against it.

Realistically, it's a drop in the bucket. We need to increase funding for science.

Cool that it helped raise awareness of what it is, but not cool that nothing was really done to figure out how it happens, why it happens, what are the causes of it happening, etc.

I don't disagree. But it did help ultimately in doing just this, for ALS at least. They have much more funding and general awareness.

Sadly it is just one of many horrific illnesses that can happen and people never hear about.

Sir Capt Jean Luc Picard ended the fad forever with just a flick of his pen.

didn't the original challenge was "donate, or pour an ice bucket on yourself?"
but then people who donated still poured the bucket anyway?

Yes.

I don't get why this change bothers people tho. It helped the cause

After seeing so many of these, the only one I laughed at was the one where they murdered the dude with the excavator, and then still poured the water on him after.

It's fucked up but that one is funny.

It's crazy to me how many of these people I see were using these excavators, and just how many of them mess up in the same way (move it down vertically instead of dumping the bucket forward).

I was raised around equipment like that cause my dad was a landscaper. I've operated those buckets and I still get a bit nervous doing so. What were these people thinking

The campaign itself was to raise awareness. The outcome was actually very successful in helping clarify the role of C9orf72 in ALS and FTD and to help start multiple clinical trials on ALS drugs. The first drug combo to show actual improvement in ALS happened as well.

Not eating any type of animal sea life (fish, crustaceans, mollusks, etc) that bioaccumulate BMAA is a start.

The evidence that specific chemicals cause it is pretty sketchy. There's a strong hereditary connection however.

There have been multiple instances of cases of ALS being diagnosed in higher concentrations of populations alongside bodies of water. Rivers, lakes, estuaries, seas, oceans. One study found three ALS patients in Maryland living within half a mile of each other, all three sharing a commonality of eating the same weekly local seafood. 2/3 of those tests were positive for BMAA, which indicates it does exist in higher concentrations than normal in the aquatic food chain, and it can affect humans in such a manner.
