The dog that was the inspiration for the dogmeat in Fallout 4 specifically

I didnt always like dogmeat. Damn pup was always in my way while I was trying to stop Super Mutants from rigging up satellite dishes to pirate the Spice Channel.

Dog looked awesome in goggles and a bandana though and the perk that let me pin enemies to the ground was OP as hell. RIP doggo

I never used him, I'd much rather have a companion that talks and can be romanced.

One of the first things I did when setting up a settlement in Sanctuary was build a house for myself to store stuff, then put a dog house in front of it so he could chill there. Then I'd drop a dog bowl and some balls around so he'd have stuff to play with.

Never really took him with me except for when the game forces him on you.

I tended to treat Codsworth the same way. Only time I ever put him in my party was the one time when I was trying to recruit and max affection for every possible companion. And even then I mostly just put him in the party and then hung around for a hour or so and played with mods so he'd just level up quickly.

This. In a game where you can only bring one companion with you, it's almost always going to be the one you're trying to romance, at least for me.

It would have been nice if they could have had a secondary slot for pets (sort of the way New Vegas does, where you can have a person and either ED-E or Rex), or even the way Dragon Age 2 did it where you can essentially "summon" your dog as a separate ability.

Though even then I might not have taken him along, because I usually don't like using dogs as combat support in games, because then they occasionally get hurt and whimper and that makes me sad.

I loved Dogmeat. I did switch him out to so I could fuck MacCready, though...

I liked how in Far Cry 5, you could bring two companions with you...

Yeah, but if I can take two companions, I'm still not bringing the dog.

Hell, Dragon Age: Origins lets you have three companions, and I still never take the dog after I get more than three companions total.

Having the dog in a "pet" character slot that can't be filled by a human(oid) makes me more likely to bring it along, if only because you're not sacrificing character dialogue/narrative for the sake of it (though to be fair, in NV I still mostly just kept ED-E, so I never really took the dog there, either. But Rex is kind of a unique case anyway).

Which is why I liked DA2, where you could trigger the dog as a sustained effect and he would just appear (until he took too much damage, but then you could summon him again after a cooldown). Or Bard's Tale, where he just followed you around regardless of how many other summoned allies you had. Even games like ESO where the pet that follows you is purely cosmetic (or Pillars of Eternity 2, where the pet is mostly cosmetic, but gives a passive boost to you or your entire party depending on which one you use).

Mod that lets you bring dogmeat without counting as taking the companion slot is best mod.
