I'm impressed that she claims she wants to basically rework everything to target a different audience (while emphasizing that it isn't "woke" after lamenting having to constantly "explain power dynamics" on a game review site), then preemptively blames google for its failure to expand before it even happens (or doesn't). Talk about covering your bases.

Abandoning the audience you have, to woo the audience you don't, has never worked well. It's nigh-universally seen as the exact jump-the-shark moment when the demise of whatever-damn-thing became inevitable.

tbh, I visit Kotaku periodically. Once in a blue moon they'll have a cool article or break some interesting news.

This welcome essay is a mess, though, and drops about a dozen red flags. Saying you want to change "what a gaming website can be" and then going on and on about power dynamics and racism is...hoo boy.

She seems fine on the Kinda Funny podcast lately but I dunno much about her specifically. I don't really bother with Kotaku much after Schreier left. Although the article about Sony's handling of indie developers from today was good.

Yeah, there was a harassment campaign against developer Zoe Quinn and accusations of favoritism because she had dated one of the people who reviewed her game, Gone Home.

Between that and the harassment of Anita Sarkeesian earlier in the year, there was a response from game journos in the form of articles about the gamer identity.

And that started Gamergate.

More like it was found out that those responsible for reviewing indie games were also contributing to the Patreons for those games to be developed. Gaming "journalists" then tried to make it about gamers being in the wrong when people got rightfully pissed about this truth coming out. And of course at the time people were still clueless enough to believe the scam artist who was playing the victim card.
