Can you help me understand this, because I see this opinion a lot and I don't get how anyone can possibly come to this conclusion. HL2 is a masterpiece of world design.

not him and i dont think its a step back in every way but i do think it has a lot of problems that would be exacerbated over time by the genre

-Way less weapon variety, not only in terms of amount of guns but also their function. The creative weirdness of half-life's arsenal is completely gone in 2 in favor of way more grounded guns that are mostly hitscan and differ only in range and rate of fire. Obtaining them also feels very spaced out

-Way less enemy variety. Everyone who played HL1 more or less remembers the segments where the military is fighting you very fondly for the pretty innovative way they're introduced and the basic sorts of tactics they use which were pretty inspired for the time. HL2 is basically if 90% of HL1 was you fighting the same army grunt over and over again, and honestly the Combine don't feel much smarter in terms of AI either. I think the repetitive nature of the combine is part of why people look back on Ravenholm like they did the army dudes in 1.

-when HL1 was released there was a lot of criticism about it being overly scripted compared to its contemporaries and HL2 goes hardcore with making it even more so. HL2 is very much the prototypical archetype for the sorts of "big linear hallway fight the same man over and over again between scripted story scene that you cant skip" that stuff like Call of Duty took and ran with, and that is only really beginning to be shaked off for more open ended gameplay over the past four or five years. If you like the story a ton I guess it's not as much of a sticking point but I find it annoying and that it kills the momentum of the game hardcore when you're forced into story scenes so much

Like all of this would get pushed way overboard by companies like Infinity Ward to make the FPS genre as boring as possible and I think HL2 does it a lot better than the years of games emulating it, but it does have the same problems as a lot of them so I get why someone wouldn't enjoy it as much as the first game which doesn't suffer from any of this nearly as bad

For all the jank and odd design choices, I really cannot think of another game that had me grinning like an idiot for almost the entire playthrough.
