Luke Reardon, the "ginger midget" (how he was referred to in the movie) was dead by the time Holmes and Watson got to him, but he did pretty much EVERYTHING for Blackwood in that movie.

• Designed the cyanide gas
• Designed the flammable substance that burned Standish
• Designed the paralytic that ended up drowning Rotheram
• Manufactured the adhesive that held together Blackwood's slab
• Manufactured the drug that gave the outer appearance of Blackwood's death.
• Probably engineered together the entire gas delivery device and the radio signal transmitter that activated it.

And once Blackwood started his plan he just... killed Reordan. Dude would have probably been super useful in the future.

Like all Blackwood really brought to the operation was funding and the theatrics that led everyone to believe he was a sorcerer.
