That top is SERRATED.

I saw this very stool in a biolab I was working at yesterday. I'm like "you know these are really meant for places with lots of oil and people would be wearing heavy work clothes, right?"

It's not meant for people who are wearing slacks and a lab coat. You connect with that thing with exposed skin, good flipping luck to that skin.

Officially no it's not an OSHA violation. It's just an unnecessary risk brought about through the purchase of the wrong type of equipment.

Like ordering a SCBA when an exposure calls for no worse than an N95 respirator.

It's a good philosophy to not have the control be more dangerous than what you're seeking to control.

What's your place?

We use them at work, but it's a factory and we are wearing work pants and slip resistant leather steel toed boots. Putting them in any other setting is outright madness.

It's a manufacturing facility.
Is there any particular material like machine oil or other slippery substance that would make a flat step stool a hazard?

I work in a dealership parts department, and we have to deal with oil and other other slippery fluids a lot, particularly contaminated ones from old parts and engines and such. Even we just have a regular step stool with black gripper tape

Usually if you're oily enough that it could pose a problem, you either go home and change or walk around in cat litter/absorbent material to try and soak it up

Sometimes, sure.
Probably shouldn't be wearing shorts on the floor in such a place, anyway. Exposure risk to open skin can lead to skin problems.

Then again, I should be charging you for this. :-P

Yep. I don't personally work in automotive, but have proper absorbent material for spills is always a good thing.

I'll have my guys contact your guys and pull a switcharoo, we've only got flat step-stools for some reason despite there being a prolific amount of oil and coolant.

Granted they also expect us to climb the equipment without any harnesses lol

I'm just saying I think the non-slip aspect of the stool (and it is practically impossible to slip on it) outweighs the abrasion potential of touching it with bare skin.
Well sure that's easy to say until you're accelerating towards it at 9.8m/s^2

Do you feel that OSHA is understaffed or otherwise crippled in any way? I think it is, but I'd like to hear from someone that actually works as an employee.

Oh I'm not an OSHA employee. I'm a consultant who works for a company that contracts out to clients that need a hand with safety. It's my job to be aware of OSHA and make sure my clients are compliant to keep OSHA off their backs.

That said, OSHA is criminally understaffed and has very little authoritative power outside of doling out fines. While these fines can eventually get huge, usually companies are rich enough to just pay them.
