Gang members tend to shoot other gang members. As long as you don't go looking for trouble, you'll be fine.

Chicago is a great city otherwise.

People who act like you're gonna get murdered in Chicago have never been there. Nearly all the violence you hear about happens in the south and west neighborhoods, which are places you don't really have any reason to go anyway. The loop and the north side are awesome areas and very safe as long as you don't do anything stupid.

So far this year in Chicago

522 shot and killed
2514 wounded by gunfire.
3036 total people shot
550 homicides.

Obviously these aren't marksmen. The majority of shootings don't end in death. So probably the majority of shots fired don't connect at all. There must be like 6-7 thousand shootings. Gunshots all day everyday over there.

Someone is shot in Chicago on average every 100 minutes.

Someone dies every 10 hours

It's pretty mindblowing that this goes on in a SINGLE CITY in a US State. Oh 2020 was a record breaking year for Chicago violence and 2021 is on a pace to surpass even that.

Oh to the question, HEELL NO.

They literally murdered a famous rapper in the nice downtown part of Chicago last year with cameras and shit everywhee and I haven't heard a single thing about anyone being arrested or going to prison for it either.

I've watched some videos I wish I hadn't.

We had the equivalent happen in Toronto where another rapper got shot and killed in a major shopping area full of designer stores in downtown.
Doesn't mean Toronto is a warzone that should be avoided at all costs.
This whole "Chiraq" should be avoided because of gang violence is a myth and only mostly happens in the rough areas that tourists never even go to.

Otakon used to be in Baltimore. The convention center was near the waterfront, and that area is pretty nice. There's a big ass Barnes and Noble in an old firehouse, a pretty cool science building (or was it an aquarium) that lets you chill on this nifty rooftop lounge, and a banging pizza shop called Isabella's.

Granted this was all like 10 years ago idk

In terms of murder rates (per capita), Chicago doesn't even crack the top ten nationally:

St Louis, Detroit, and Cleveland are far worse. Dayton, Ohio has a higher murder rate than Chicago.

I'm no fan of Chicago, or the midwest in general, but get your facts straight.

I go into Chicago multiple times a week for work and have been for years. As people have said as long as you are avoiding the problematic territories everything is fine. You are buying into BS. It's a beautiful place. But I'm guessing most of the people here saying otherwise never really leave their houses anyway to understand what places are actually like. Get some real life experience

Then don't go to the part of Englewood.

Every major city has their shitholes you don't go to.

Los Angeles has Compton
Toronto has Regent Park
New York has Brownsville
London has Tottenham

Are you going to let a few bad areas define an entire city?

This. I went on a trip to Detroit years ago, and after hearing people shit all over it i went into it kind of apprehensive.

I wound up loving it. Every Detroiter i met was super nice. It gets a bad rap when its nowhere near as bad as people make it seem. I imagine Chicago is the same way.
