This is basically going to be like our first time together where we're just "doing nothing" for the day, but I at least want to cook for her a bit. We live an hour's drive apart and both have full-time jobs so it's not like we can hang out everyday. Most of our dates have been roughly around the midpoint of driving distance.

I defer to CE's expertise.

Ribeye steaks (the thick ones), shrimp cocktail, baked baby Yukon gold potatoes, some sort of healthy vegetable medley like broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Buy the dessert premade. Cheesecake.

I would go with something like korean bbq, where you have a variety of stuff with a grill on the table, vegetables and/or salad on the side and potatoes or rice, some red wine, this makes for an enjoyable slow dinner where you get plenty of time to talk and enjoy yourselves

not sure what its called in english but it can also be fondue chinoise where you get a bunch thinly sliced meat pieces and cook it in the bouillon that sits in the middle of the table, its really good (you each cook your own stuff ofc)

I have no idea what you are skilled at. It seems like anyone confident in their cooking would know what they have the most experience making. Pick what youre best at unless there are some dietary concerns or something.

Say that you're on the menu then turn on a sexy saxophone song like Careless Whisper as you start sticking various fruits near your face and you suggestively taste them. But the secret is, that one of the fruits you taste is coated with dust because you left it on the shelf too long and you begin to choke and fall down weakly trying to cough it out. That's when she walks out, bound to remember that date forever.

One of us CEtizens will come along later to save you, barring a scheduling conflict or apathy.

A plate of raw potatoes is one of the few things I can get myself to eat without complaining about it afterwards.

Im not a huge fan of potatoes. Most of them seem too oily or starchy for my tastes, or too bland or mealy. I can sometimes tolerate the creamy mashed version in a bowl but rarely eat them out of a jacket potato. And most of the boiled or roast varieties Ive tried are pretty dire. I dont mind a couple of chips at a bar though nothing like it for making you eat something and I wouldnt mind a bag of chips at home either, to give myself the opportunity to say yuck! about the potato itself and go through the motions without feeling like a complete glutton.

Until I moved into an open plan kitchen, I didnt really eat dinner with my husband Id take my food upstairs to the living room. Im not a very social person but I still needed to share some of the stuff Id made with him.

We moved into a house with an open plan kitchen and a dining room. Wed be making our dinner together or I would be making it, having moved the main activity into the kitchen (even though I cant cook that well yet). The downside of having a dining room is that I have to wait until were both finished eating before I can eat any of it.

I also realised that I was spending most of my non-eating time (and money!) in the kitchen, preparing meals for us to eat. Im not great at meal planning or really preparing a meal at the end of a long day so we often had a ready made meal in the fridge when we got home from work. It made things easier.

I made stir fry!

The sauce was great but I want to expand on stuff to put in there. The recipe I used just had broccoli, peppers, and bits of carrots, but I think about things like water chesnuts, baby corn, and other stuff for next time. :)

might I suggest for next time looking into Brocollini for the stir fry instead of Broccoli. It's taste is a bit less strong than Broccoli, but it its a little sweeter. I find it tastes better overall.

Also, if your looking for a great rice dish to have, I've been using a version of Spanish/Mexican rice that isn't too bad. Little bit of vegetable oil and minced garlic in the pan medium heat, add chipotle seasoning, cumin, and a little bit of brown sugar (its needed so the dish isn't burn your mouth off hot), and mix until fragrant. Remove from heat and add washed rice, mix to coat all the grains, and put in a rice cooker or pot with a can of tomatoes(I use San Marzanos with basil), and a bit of chicken stock (I use better than bouillon chicken stock), and a bit of water to help it cook fully. Comes out incredible. It may take a couple tries to get the recipe right though, and I've certainly messed it up a few times.

Its nuts how good it is.

If you really want to impress her, cook up some butternut squash soup. Stupidly easy to make. In a big pot, mince a large onion, add some minced garlic and cook with a bit of butter to coat the bottom of the pan. Cook until translucent, careful not to burn the butter. Add 4-5 cups of chicken stock and a 2-3 lb cubed butternut squash(without skin), and cook for 20-30 minutes on medium-high, until the squash becomes soft. Ladle into a blender, careful not to burn yourself its piping hot, and blitz until smooth. I tend to blitz it in 5-6 batches so it doesn't overspill while blending so I don't burn my hands, which has happened a few times. Once smooth, put back into the pot and cook a little bit longer to thicken it up, adding salt and pepper to taste. Serve with a dollop of Sour Cream on top.
