Subnautica, to me, was like Terraria underwater, with less freedom for building, but in a good way.

Underwater levels are usually a drag in video games, but in Subnautica, it's done in a really good way.

I haven't tried Subnautica 2, but I heard it isn't as good as the first.

Subnautica is amazing. I went in blind and holy moly. My favorite was when the AI asked me "Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?" No sentence had made me question my decisions more than that one lol

I tried Subnautica a few times because of the great things I heard about it but what people failed to mention is that the minute to minute gameplay is just swimming around looking for rocks.

Subnautica was awesome, I just never quite finished it.

Once you get to end game, youre fixing down several hundred meters. Its easy to get flipped around and not know which direction youre facing.

can be pretty disorienting

While I think the first one is better the core gameplay is so similar that I feel like whichever you played first youd like more. Theres a lot of cool atmosphere and fear of the unknown and dread of going down so deep that just wasnt there for me because I was so comfortable with it by virtue of having played the first game.

Hell naw. You need to go and explore. The game is made for that. If you use a guide you'll lose the sense of discovery and fun.

Maybe later on, but for the first couple of hours I had so many moments where I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. Every area I could explore seemed too dangerous and I couldn't find any resources to get any upgrades. Without a guide I would have dropped the game there.

I thought the same thing when I would look at it on Steam or the PS shop or something. I think I finally played it when it was the free PS4 game one month IIRC.

I was actually surprised how fun it was. I probably won't play through it a bunch of times but at least the first one is worth a playthrough.

The game forces you to read the PDA entries pretty hard. You should be able to figure out what you need to start off with just from those.

Yes, I know what equipment I need. I don't know where to get the resources to build it, and I've been swimming for half an hour without finding any. If I spend half an hour to an hour swimming around making no progress, what's going to compel me to keep playing? At that point I'm checked out.

I think the problem some people have is that they ignore the radio, which can make you lose your sense of progression since the pods always lead you to areas with useful blueprints.
