I remember it well! There was such turmoil, what with Missouri becoming a state and Florida becoming an official territory. Then George IV was crowned, and there was rejoicing on that day, I assume you!

Of course, there was that bit of political kerfuffle in Latin and South America towards the end of the season, but when is there not, am I right?

It was fine until the Civil War blew a smoking hole in the South it never really recovered from. Partly because of the failures of Reconstruction, and partly because the North always had a vested interest in grinding it into the dirt so deep it would never be capable of rising again.

Unless you're talking about the Compromise. That certainly stirred up some trouble indeed!

Im from rural Georgia. Nearly everything they struggle with in the South is self inflicted

the south isnt better than any other places and touting regional tribalism is fucking pathetic yet so many of them are just trained to do exactly that

the south has plenty of schools, libraries, and free access to commerce and government services. Theres a wealth of culture and charity abound. There arent a lot of people dying of malnutrition in the US South.

Yet the things destroying the south nowadays are simply rampant drug and alcohol abuse, diabetes, and concentrated cat piss attitudes towards anyone that is different than them in any way. In general they have a dramatically over inflated collective ego.

I know these things to be true because its exactly the kind of shit they tried to indoctrinate me with when I was a kid growing of in North Georgia and Tennessee. Im lucky that I was able to live in some other places before adulthood otherwise Id probably be some far right moron. All the schools, all the churches, they are just endlessly bombarded with that southern pride horse dook

if people in the south want the place to be better then that has to start with them stopping the whole cultural blame game about whose fault it is that they lost a war and now they just kinda suck, and they need to have a better attitude about America and start voting in a way that actually helps people

Ok, let's see how I'll remember summer 2021.

-the heat was absolutely insane and my roommate wouldn't keep the AC on

-landscaping job was great. my back hurts more sitting in a computer chair than it ever did doing physical work. like, building retaining walls with 50kg allan blocks and then shoveling a ton of gravel. I learned a lot!

-went back home for two weeks and remembered that I love a few really solid friends. had a fun 30th birthday.

-went to Vancouver and borrowed my friend's shitwagon car. took a hot lady camping, had a great time. fingerblasted some cornhole, made her cum on my face a few times, coated some cans.

I apologize, I leaned into that. I had to let off some steam by the end of the summer.

It's rarely that simple, though. Institutionalized poverty is a thing. It's kind of hard to pull yourself up by sheer force of determination when every socializing force you're subjected to from a young age is prepping you for failure.

That's not just a Southern thing. It's the same issue that makes discussion of poverty and crime in inner cities or "the black community" a hard thing, and solutions even harder. And it's the reverse of what Twitter is talking about when they go "WOMGPrivilege" every 5 minutes. Like it or not, people are pre-programmed by their upbringing long before they have any real capacity to make their own life choices. Yes, some people can overcome those handicaps through determination (or throw away all the advantages they start with if they come from a much better place), but those are the outliers, not the average person.

It's also not really about cultural blame, it's about the realities of the educational system, funding, economic opportunities, and a thousand other variables that have been in place for decades, shaping each successive generation to fall into the same traps the previous one did. Eventually, patterns of behavior are normalized, then fetishized, and ultimately become nearly impossible for any individual to really overcome or shift.

Sociology is a complex subject for a reason. Anyone who offers easy answers is generally wrong.

That is hardly unique to the South compared to other places. Everywhere has that problem. Things arent gonna get better as long as they are trying to go back in stop and stop societal progress. They continue to shoot themselves in the foot at every step.
