The View cohost Joy Bewhar said Thursday that black people don't need to be afraid of the COVID-19 vaccine anymore because white people did it as an "experiment."

Co-host Sunny Hostin said she was struck by the number of Americans who remain unvaccinated and that the solution may be "fear" 56% of Americans are fully vaccinated, while 65% have received one dose. Only 46% of black Americans have received at least one shot of the coronavirus vaccine as of Oct. 4, according to CDC data.

I also remember the ad campaign, this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs, with the egg on the street frying. That works. Fear works, unfortunately, Hostin explained.

How do they get through to people like the black audience, for instance, the African American community, who has been burnt in the past by these Tuskegee experiments and things coming out that have harmed them," Behar said. "I dont blame that community for being skittish about it, but I say that so many white people have gotten it now, you know, the experiment has been done on white people now."

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg chimed in, agreeing with Behar. Ive said to more people, 'Do you see another head at the back on my head? Is there a tail back there?'" she said.
She said that she was proof the vaccines were safe

The Tuskegee experiment, there are countless things we can point to. But this is not one of them, Goldberg continued. This isnt one of them. And did you just say, Joy, white people? This is what I said at the beginning: White people are getting it. If you dont see them with double heads its OK. You know, if you dont see a tail, its OK.

Sometimes I swear the view is just an in joke among friends to see who can say the stupidest thing and still get millions of views.

But hey if this gets any anti vax morons to get the damn jab I guess I'll cheerlead it

Is she wrong though? It'd be one thing if they were only giving it black people. However, so many people have got it, and are completely fine. They're acting like they're among the first to get a new vaccine

I remember before that "This is your brain on drugs commercial". Before it drugs were everywhere. Six months later no one did drugs. It was amazing.

Yes she is wrong and stupid

The notion of "Don't trust the scientists and clinical trials, just look at white people . If they're not dead then clearly no one is lying and you non whites can eventually get life saving medical treatments with confidence . But always remember to judge everything via race"

Is utter nonsense and promotes an extremely toxic, regressive and emotional way of thinking

I mean Goldberg's "Do I have a face on the back of my head?' and "Man those your brain on drugs commercials were effective!" read like parodies of the things stupid people say.

I'm glad they're pro vax and hope this convinces someone but I'm not sure trying to match stupidity with the anti vaxxers is the right tactic

i mean it should be obvious that a lot of people are getting it, aren't having long term problems this many months out, and it is helping with covid cases/severity

No.

Over the past 12 years I have read about Tuskegee every couple of years due to ethics requirements, and until recently it was an esoteric piece of biomedical ethics history, at least in the general public.

In a vacuum, sure, it is a bad comment. But she was speaking to people who are not getting the vaccine due to past racial injustices.

And the notion isnt Don't trust the scientists and clinical trials, as you put it, but rather To those who don't trust the scientists and clinical trials.

Black people knew about Tulsa, Rosewood, Tuskegee and forced sterilizations into the 1970s. They are cultural touchstones. Some of the people affected are still alive today and/or their direct descendants are still alive.

Yeah, no. On average, people aren't taught it in high school, and families don't just gather around the table and talk about biomedical experiments.

The vast majority of people learn about it for the first time in the context of biomedical ethics in college. And the subset of people who do that is relatively small. When I used to TA an intro course that had it as a subsection, we surveyed the students to get a feel for prior exposure. For the most part, students felt upset that this was their first time hearing of it, given that it was so recent in history.

You're talking out your ass now. Black people knew of these things and quite often do sit around the table and talk about them. Grandparents, aunts and uncles.

No one said we did. However on topic, Tuskegee, Tulsa, Juneteenth, lynchings, forced sterilizations and similar incidents are cultural touchstones.

They are and have been widely known within the black community for generations.

While I don't particularly like that line of reasoning (or even more so, the racist mentality that would exist in anyone it appeals to)... if it convinces people to get vaccinated, then whatever, sure, we'll go with that.
